Mickeys Wild Adventure was released in 1996 and was an enhanced port of a game that was released for the Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, and Sega CD. It was an unusual game to be released for the PlayStation as Sony was trying to move away from 2D gaming. It may seem like a simple port, but quite a lot of work actually went into this game.
Mickey Through The Ages
Just like in Mickey Mania (the game this is based on), Mickeys Wild Adventure has Mickey going through time through some of his most famous appearances. You will get to play through, Steamboat Willie, The Mad Doctor, Moose Hunters, Lonesome Ghosts, Mickey & The Beanstalk, The Band Concert, and The Prince And The Pauper. What we have here is a bit of a greatest hits collection of classic Mickey Mouse animation and the game does a fantastic job of showing the legacy of Mickey Mouse a ton of respect.
The gameplay of Mickeys Wild Adventure is that of a 2D platformer. Very little has been done to the gameplay here from Mickey Mania. You control Mickey as you go through each level. You can jump on enemies to defeat them or you can use these marbles that you pick up to attack them from a distance. The collision detection is a little suspect when you try to jump on an enemy so make sure you jump on them in the middle as best you can.
There are some cool levels where you run into the screen, the PlayStation does this better than any other version of this game and it is a lot of fun. This PlayStation version of the game also has an exclusive section with Willie The Giant which is awesome. Mickey can take five hits before he dies and you can find health and extra lives if you do a little exploration.
Hey There Slick!
Mickeys Wild Adventure is a great-looking game and by a mile the best version of the lot. Many people will point to the Sega CD version which is better than what the Genesis and SNES offered, however, if you have to play Micky Mania, this is the way you should do it. The sprites were redone for this game and as a result, they really pop. The other versions of the game look good, but this one clearly looks better. This uses the same soundtrack as the Sega CD version of the game. That may sound like a negative, but it is not. The Sega CD already had a great soundtrack and I think lifting that and keeping it here was the right decision.
Not many people are aware that Mickeys Wild Adventure is actually a port of Mickey Mania. Not only that, this is the best way you can experience that game. It may not have wowed the world when it was released, but I think this game does hold up very well and it is certainly worth checking out.

Disney's premier mouse, Mickey, makes his way onto the home gaming system again--this time on the PlayStation. Although Sony of Europe admits to bringing the title out in Europe, Sony of America denies that it is being released in the states. Mickey's Wild Adventure is a side-scroller typical of the previous Mickey games, featuring nice graphics and animation typical of Disney.
