Reviving the, once thought lost, trend of decent extreme sports games that actually cared about player satisfaction; we are introduced to Monster Energy Supercross 2 by Milestone S.r.l. This title gets you blasting through courses in style in a bid to see who the best is. Rev those engines and let’s get to it.
I’m going to lay it out for you clearly right now. This game is awesome. Being what I can only describe as the ‘spiritual successor’ to the amazing MX vs. ATV Reflex, this game brings back everything that we loved so much from that classic; the gorgeous style, clothes rippling in the wind, amazing physics engine and a clean and realistic quality to it all.
Providing a bunch of player modes you to enjoy, they got single player mode that lets you just jump into a race whenever, wherever. It’s got a nice career mode which includes a nice amount of competitions and a championship. It’s also got what I found to be something close to a favourite; the Compound. In the compound you are free to fly around a bunch of jumps and test your skills but it’s mostly for practice. You put the effort in and practice and you’ll crush the opposition.
The game handles really well and there’s an incredible satisfaction that comes with successfully completing a trick in the middle of a high octane race but thankfully there is a lot of scalable and changeable settings that can make it more or less realistic for you. Change event lengths, decide if you want to control rider weight distribution or maybe you’d like to toggle ‘flow aid,’ a program that helps you take jumps and land without slowing down.
I love customisation elements in video games and the fact they bothered to let you do that in this title is a gift. You can customize our bike with over 3000 elements so you can you make something nice and unique, but the customisation doesn’t stop there. They also let you customise your avatar with beards, tattoos, earrings, hats alongside the standard skin, eye and hair colours. This allows the player to integrate with the game on a deeper level as well as just being really, really fun.
Customisation of your bike and character is one thing, but do you know what gives a game incredible replay value? It’s being able to keep designing the levels yourself. I cannot stress enough how many games should have this feature in them because when they do, the game gets elevated to a status of ingenuity that modern titles seldom achieve. You can design and construct your own tracks and then share them in the community, downloading other peoples and uploading your own. Allowing you to keep playing new and interesting levels long after other Motorcross games would have ended.
If you have a longstanding passion for classic Motorcross games then this is a definite get. I had a great time playing it and I’m sure you will too.
- Great physics.
- So much to customise and create.
- Player re-spawns can be frustrating
- The crowds look like cardboard cut outs.
