Monster Hunter: World

Get ready for the next gen instalment of a longstanding and highly celebrated franchise in Monster Hunter: World. Welcome back to the stage everything we loved about the old games without any of the incredibly frustrating inter zone loading screens. Prepare yourself for some awesome, if not slightly implausible, combat with incredible environments, huge monsters and even bigger swords made from the bones of their slain brethren.

Gameplay

This game strong suit is, without a doubt, its gameplay. Not only was this the first Monster Hunter title that was accessible for the general public, but it was so in a way that allowed for anyone with the new consoles AND those who hadn’t played the previous titles to enjoy it.

The primary objective of this game is to run around a foreign land, kill the native fauna, harvest their parts so that you may forge greater weapons and armour which lets you hunt and kill even bigger things. It’s a rinse and repeat style game but the fun is in the huge environment that you can run around in and the size of the battles that you engage in.

There is a huge selection of brilliantly designed monsters for you to hunt with large scale battles where you can fight alone or team up with friends to tackle the complex combat scenes involving beasts 20 times your size. It makes for a truly engrossing spectacle.

With a huge selection of weapons available, the game promotes options for you to find your own style and fight your way. Even if you don’t want to fight and want to play more of a support role, you can do that by providing buffs to your teammates. A great deal of thought has been placed into the combat system, and with how diverse the monsters and their attacks are, it really shows every time you jump in.

If I had to liken it to other games, perhaps Horizon Zero Dawn mixed with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt would be good choices. Same level of depth and similar mechanics but with a customizable character.

The World We Hunt In

The world is stunningly beautiful. As you run around the new continent that you’ve been sent to explore, you will see many different environments ranging from sandy deserts, dense jungles and arid mountains. All these different locations come with creatures that you could genuinely believe would inhabit them, ripe for the hunting. The attention to detail and the amount that you can do in it is truly stunning. If you want an experience of what it would be like to be on the frontier of a frightening new world, this is an excellent and realistic example.

Multiplayer

This game went above and beyond by doing the thing that we all wanted; they brought in a tight and well-crafted multiplayer. Jump into the action with friends or strangers to tackle these intense beasts with up to 4 other players. You are bound to have a ball thanks to this excellent introduction of a simple but effective mechanic.
