I watch a ton of true crime docs on Netflix so Murder Mystery Machine is a game that is right up my street. This game just ticks all of the boxes for what I want in a detective style game. The more I thought about it, the more I realized that there are not actually a ton of games in this style out there these days. You would think that being a detective would be something that more games would try and do!
Grab The Evidence Rookie!
Murder Mystery Machine as you would expect is very story driven. We play as Cassandra Clarke who is a rookie at the DCA and it is her first day on the job. She is paired with grizzled detective Nate Huston and the two of them go to a crime scene where a politician was murdered, but things soon take a twist and they end up uncovering a case bigger than they ever could have imagined.
Working The Crime Scene
The gameplay of Murder Mystery Machine is done in an isometric kind of style which is pretty cool. I like the smart and stylish presentation they have here and each crime scene that you will visit requires some real detective work on your part. You will need to find clues, talk to witnesses, see what evidence is real and what is not, and stuff like that. There is a lot to do and much of it will require you to try and think like a detective as you do. You may think that this isometric style they have gone for may not be all that immersive, but trust me when I tell you it is. You quite often have to change the viewing angle so you can get a better look at things and see things that may at first look normal, but are actually out of place.
Who, What, And Why?
Working the crime scenes is just part of being a detective. You have a wall of evidence before you and it is up to you to keep it organized so that you can look at it and try to piece it all together. This is something we have all seen a million times on TV shows and it is pretty cool how this game manages to replicate that.
You can be looking at the same stuff for a good five minutes until something clicks and you figure it out. Trying to piece all this together is like a puzzle game and I think it is very cool the way it is so different from when you are walking around the crime scene looking for clues and evidence.
What we have here with Murder Mystery Machine is one of the more interesting games of the year. I always say to my wife when we are watching a true crime doc that I should have been a detective! Well, now thanks to this game I get to act out those fantasies from the comfort of my gaming chair. There are not many games like this so if you have an interest in crime and detective stories be sure to give this game a closer look.
Pros:
- It tells a fantastic detective story
- I love how it has a very stylish look to it
- Working the crime scene feels awesome
- I liked how there was a puzzle aspect to putting all the evidence together
Cons:
- I do not think there is much replay value here
- Some of the clues may be a bit too cryptic to figure out for some folks
