NeverAwake

Twin-stick shooters are nothing new in the gaming world, and we rarely see a game that breaks boundaries in the genre. However, everyone has ideas about what makes a decent title, and NeverAwake is a testament to that concept. It's a colorful arcade game that doesn't look like it's going to be revolutionary but provides enough intrigue to make it worth our while.

NeverAwake seems to fuse pretty colors in a nightmarish setting. The player aims to blast anyone and everything to escape these bad dreams. Yes, it's a pretty standard twin-stick shooter on the outside, but the themes provide players an opportunity to face the things they hated as a child head-on. Well, that notion alone sounds appealing, so let's transcend into the world of NeverAwake!

Childhood Nightmares

So what's happening in NeverAwake that gives this twin-stick shooter an appeal? You'll play as Rem, a girl who can never wake up, battling her childhood demons in a world of eternal nightmares. Armed with rapid-fire weapons, you'll float around each level facing off with evil vegetables, pets, dentists, and bullies. And everything that scared her for life in the real world.

We can't deny that even though the mechanics and objectives are relatively straightforward, NeverAwake provides a beautiful game world that's eerie yet somehow comforting. A vast palette of contrasting colors makes combat intense, and fluid animations make these nightmares immersive yet challenging to overcome. The even more fun part that lightens the mood is that enemies take the form of vegetables, animals, and everything that terrified Rem in her past.

It's intriguing to discover the multitude of fears as you progress through the over 80 challenging levels, each ever-slightly trickier than the next. The fantastic visuals motivate power through NeverAwake; even though the game gets more rigid, precise movements are critical. The increasing difficulty may frustrate players, but we know there's a massive market for this type of gameplay.

So NeverAwake is a pleasant surprise for those who thought twin-stick shooters were all but stale. As we mentioned earlier, there's nothing particularly groundbreaking about the mechanics. But we have a well-made title featuring outstanding visuals, polished gameplay, and a story that's at least going to spark some interest in the protagonist's past.

Terrifyingly Colorful

NeverAwake is surprisingly enjoyable. That's because I went into the game with lower expectations, considering most fun of the genre tends to follow a standard formula. It's not to say this title doesn't do that. Still, it does a bang-up job with beautiful hand-drawn visuals and gameplay that's challenging yet not deathly frustrating.

8

Think of NeverAwake as a take on Cuphead but with more sympathy towards the casual player. Nothing stops anyone from picking the game up and enjoying the first few levels. Time will tell if you can take the progressive difficulty. The game is a nice blend of nightmarish aesthetics with intense twin-stick arcade gameplay; make sure you're using a controller!
