What we have here with Nitro Kid is a game that offers style and substance. This is a rogue-like deckbuilding style of game and it is one of the coolest looking games I have seen this year. It has a funky 80s vibe going, some awesome synthwave soundtrack, and a whole lot of 80s tude. I am getting a huge kick out of this game and while it may look all flashy and stylish, there is some real depth to the gameplay here that will hook you right from the start.

Leave Those Kids Alone!

Set in Miami during the 80s, Nitro Kid takes place in a world where certain kids have special powers. However, there is this evil agency called, INFINITY which is the largest corporation around that is kidnapping these kids and using their powers for weapons. This is pretty damn messed up and INFINITY need to be put into their place and luckily, we have three badass agents that are willing to do just that!

Three Heroes Stepping Up!

There are three playable characters in Nitro Kid (although I am sure you just start off with one and the others need to be unlocked) what is cool about this is that each character is unique. They all have their own motivations, but they also have their own playstyle and deck of cards too. L33 is the main guy and he is a fast martial arts kind of dude. J4X is a heavy hitter that has some interesting counter attacking abilities. K31 is all about using tech, gadgets, and weapons. Each character that you can play as is offering you a unique twist on things.

Powering The Grid

While I am loving the style and vibe that Nitro Kid has going on, it is the core gameplay that I feel is going to make this very addictive. It is a grid-based game where each move that you make really counts. You have a deck of cards that you can use to dish out various awesome king fu style moves, special abilities, buffs, specials, and so on. There are cad upgrades, fusion attacks, and more once you start to get the hang of things. It makes for a very challenging, but also fun and addictive deck-building style of game. I feel that the whole funky and vibrant setting of the game gets you more pumped up to play it.

That 80s Neon!

What was it with the 80s and neon? Anyway, Nitro Kid has the funkiest style of any game that I have seen this year. It is bright, cell-shaded, and looks like an 80s action/kung fu flick and that is pretty damn awesome. It is just such a nice-looking game and it sounds weird, but it is the kind of game you could look at for four hours and not get sick of it. Accompanying this awesome looking game is one of the best soundtracks I have heard in quite some time. It is all 80s synthwave stuff and it is all original music that was crafted for this game!

I truly do think that Nitro Kid is an awesome rogue-like deckbuilding game. I am loving the 80s vibe and style that is going on here and the whole premise of things here feels like it could be something out of an action movie I rented from the video store as a kid. While there is a lot of depth to the game, I feel like it is not being done at the expense of the game being fun. Sure, it may have a bit of a learning curve, but it is not as brutal as some other games of this style can be.

Pros:

  • It is set in the 80s and that is cool
  • I am loving how bright everything in the game is
  • The deck-building gameplay is fun, deep, and awesome
  • The synthwave soundtrack is truly epic

Cons:

  • If you over stuff being set in the 80s, it may not click with you
  • With it being a deck-building game, things can be a tad random in places
