In the darkened forests of Oaken, battle has broken out. The forest has become corrupted. In order to defend the forest and save what you love, you must go to battle against forest spirits who have turned to evil. Oaken is a tactical rogue lite that sets you up on a grid to do your battles and offers some unique concepts to help keep you entertained.

Long term gameplay

Oaken will drive you to think in extreme long term, especially compared to shorter battle rogue lites like Slay The Spire. You only have so many units, and every time they get damaged they lose a health point. If the unit loses all of its health points it is taken out of the round. You also only have so much magic and resources to put into your units, so you really need to think about whether to put your buffs into a unit that may or may not be salvageable. The game also forces you to think about what direction your units are facing, as they can only attack from certain directions.

Game divided into chapters

The game is divided into several chapters, which each chapter taking about an hour to complete. If you’re used to short rounds that just take a few minutes, this may be too long for you to find enjoyable, but for many players the length is perfectly manageable. All of the moves and abilities for the units are clearly telegraphed, so you’ll be able to know more or less the outcome of a move before you make it.

Beautiful graphics

The graphics are also very well done, especially for this type of game. They lend to the RPG vibe the game gives off and adds to the overall experience.

Bug causing some issues

While it is likely to be repaired, at this time there is a bug that frequently prevents you from being able to continue your progress. You will finish a round, but the game freezes and will not allow you past the end of this round. Although this detracts from gameplay, it’s important to remember this game is in Early Release, and there are currently only 3 chapters to get through. It’s likely the game will improve more from here, and bugs like this one will be fixed.

Oaken has a lot of potential in the rogue lite genre. The game offers some unique gameplay options and allows players who enjoy longer battles to think in very long terms. Although this game may not be suited for people who just want to bang out a quick round and get to the next chapter.

It’s important to remember when looking at this game that it is still in very early stages. At present the game only offers 3 chapters, and there are still bugs to be fixed. This is a beginning point, but even still in the beginnings, we can see the potential for it to grow into something wonderful.
