Currently available as an early access title, Peglin is a roguelike pachinko style game that just oozes personality and fun. I will warn you that as I write this, there is not exactly a ton of content here in the game, but the random nature of the way that runs are produced does help alleviate this in a small way. It is way more challenging than you would think and I really do feel that the game has something really special about it and it is well worth your time giving it a go.

Ok Dragons! Enough Is Enough!

The whole premise of Peglin is very cute. Our main character is a little goblin who for years has had dragons come to the woods and steal what he holds dear, namely his treasure. Well, he has had enough of this and he is heading on an epic quest through the woods, to the place the dragons call home to get his precious loot back. Even though the game is not exactly story driven, what is here is a great deal of fun.

Watching The Balls Drop

Think of games like Peggle and Slay the Spire and you will have an idea of what to expect from Peglin. You play as the little goblin and you have to drop the balls down through the pachinko style level and hit as many pegs as you can. The more pegs you hit the better for you as the more damage you will do to the enemy and the more stuff you will get as well. You can upgrade your orbs (balls) and relics that you come across as you progress through the game. While the game is random in its nature, I must admit that I did feel I saw all of the upgrades and things that the game had to offer after just a few runs. However, that is due to the game being in early access so it is hard to be too critical of it for that.

A Blast From The Past

I am a huge fan of the presentation of Peglin. Along the top of the screen, we have our little goblin hero along with the monster that wants to spoil the fun. Below this, we have the pachinko screen that is designed to look like the woods or wherever the battle is taking place. These screens are randomized and this does help keep things fresh. What I really like about the art style of this game is that it has a kind of 90s computer game look to it which I think is great. Even with the kind of retro style to it, the little goblin is cute and the whole game has this very whimsical charm about it which I really do like.

So far, I have had a great time with Peglin. Even though there is not exactly a ton of content here just yet, I still think that this is a worthwhile purchase. I think that they may have something very special here and I have a feeling that this game could turn out to be a real cult hit like Peggle and Slay The Spire, two games that have clearly inspired what has been done here.

  • The whole premise of the game is a lot of fun
  • The levels are randomized which helps with the lack of content
  • There is a real whimsical nature about the whole game
  • More content is going to come as the game moves along development

  • The lack of content may be an issue for some people
  • There is a bit of a random nature to the game due to the pachinko style gameplay
