One Piece: Unlimited World Red is a solid game from Ganbarion that takes players on an exciting journey into the world of One Piece. The story follows Luffy and the crew into a brand-new adventure created by alongside Eiichiro Oda, just for this game alone. Featuring some brilliant new characters and an island for players to explore, there’s a lot to go over so munch on that Devil Fruit and let’s get into it.
Gameplay
There is a handsome amount of gameplay here that is hard to argue with in regards to quantity and quality. Breaking it up, there are two main sections involved when it comes to the gameplay: the combat and everything else.
In regards to combat, the player has complete use of all the members of the Straw Hat crew, all of which come with their own abilities and fighting styles. When you go out into the missions with your fireteam of three chosen crewmembers, you are able to switch out between them all whenever you see fit, be it in the middle or completely out side of combat scenes. The combat itself is pretty straight forward and easy to get into, you don’t have to think too hard about it as its mostly button bashing for combos and picking your enemies apart. The one thing that does require a little more thought are the bosses, although some of them are quite simple, others require a significant amount of preparation with items at the ready and hefty health bars available so that you can duke it out with some real beasts. It gives an impression similar to Dragons Dogma: Dark Arisen in that particular respect.
In regards to everything else, the majority of the game is traversing a long pathway between fights and a little island that you can renovate with money and collected items. The island does permit for Luffy to zip up to and run around of rooftops and the addition of Y-Axis movement is much appreciated. It handles somewhat similarly to One Piece: World Seeker.
Art Style
The art style is just like in the show. Everything is incredibly vibrant and pleasant to look at, all the characters have been brilliantly digitally recreated in the game. All the characters, be it from the crew, or the greater world, or even the new characters have been brilliantly brought to life. Speaking of which, Eiichiro Oda created a character just for this game in the form of the primary villain Patrick Redfield.
Story
The story here has been designed solely for this game so don’t worry about it spoiling anything if you aren’t fully up to date on the show. It’s a simple concept where the crew has been kidnapped and its up to Luffy to rescue them. Seems simple enough, but given the villain and his plans, the crew will reunite and fight their way through some all-time favorites and heavy hitters of the franchise.
This is a really solid game with loads of gameplay value for die-hards of the series and newcomers alike. If you are interested in a fantastical world with lots of fights, then you’ll love this.
Pros:
- Simple and easy combat
- Great story length
Cons:
- Can sometimes get bogged down with half-baked ideas
