Retro Machina is a visually-appealing, futuristic puzzle game with a sense of adventure that most wouldn’t expect from a strategic video game. Available on Steam, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and the Xbox One, this single-player experience follows the journey of an outcast robot through a city with a strictly robotic population. In a world where humanity is nonexistent, players lead a lone robot on a quest to discover what happened to the human inhabitants of the past. With five stages, puzzle-solving missions and free-form gameplay style, it’s not hard to get sucked into the vibrant world of Retro Machina.
Artful Graphics with a Retro Feel
Perhaps the most satisfying aspect of Retro Machina is the vibrant graphics style, being sentimental towards the science-fiction illustrations depicted in the 1950s. Whether it be the bright colors of outdoor settings or the intricate shading within caves and abandoned buildings, the combination of lighting and color choices render the gameplay a visual masterpiece.
A core detail within gameplay is the unique ability to control other robots for a variety of differing functions in order to progress through challenges and ward off enemies. Continuing through levels requires the use of enemy robots to open doors, destroy traps, and ultimately lead players closer to each stage’s conclusion. This makes the action portion of the game more strategic, though players will also go guns blazing and have to barrel through enemies from time to time. Still, employing the powers of other robots, such as small spider-like automatons to travel through tight pathways, is a necessary action which arises throughout each stage of the campaign.
Puzzles, Action, & Upgrades
Although puzzles are a crucial part of gameplay, Retro Machina poses a sense of action which urges players to upgrade abilities for an edge over enemies with increasing difficulty. Additionally, players can control other robots and employ their attacks to assist them in combat, adding another function to the unique hacking ability.
Retro Machina is a relatively simple, yet gorgeous puzzle-based game with a sense of action and adventure uncommonly seen within the typical strategy genre of video games. The visual appeal is reminiscent of sci-fi depictions from the 50s and 60s, and has a way of keeping players engaged along with the intense combat which ensues throughout the course of each stage.
Pure strategy gamers may find the action aspect a bit too daunting for their taste, though it does add a certain luster to keep players engaged instead of conforming to the low-energy persona of most strategy-based titles.
The artful appeal is enough to draw your interest, and the gameplay only bolsters the overall experience. You’ll enjoy the creative uses of the unique “control” ability, intricate puzzles which continue to pose new challenges, and the action-packed aspect which provides a nice break from difficult puzzle-solving. The puzzles can hinder gameplay a bit with the occasional stall in stage progression, though overall, it’s an eye-catching title with varying routes of completion which render it an addictive experience.
