With a title like Revenge Of The Colon, I was not sure what the heck I was getting into with this game! This is a body horror style of game where you play as a gastroenterologist who has to help people who have stomach problems! The premise is gross and rather unique and the game's visuals have a retro style to them that also help make this one of the strangest and most odd games you will ever play. It has multiple endings too, so it gives you a reason to literally “dive back in” more than once.
The Best In Town
I was kind of surprised by how story driven Revenge Of The Colon was. We are the best gastroenterologist in town and the game follows us through our week at work where we have to help various patients who have stomach issues. Each patient has their own story and things start out “normal” enough, well as normal as digging through someone's butt can be of course. However, by the end of the week, things do start to take a darker turn and there were a couple of great twists here that I did not see coming.
Talking It Through
I thought the way the story was presented in Revenge Of The Colon was rather interesting. We start each “stage” by chatting with our patients as we learn a little bit about them as well as finding out more about ourselves too. The patients range from a little old lady who has “misplaced” a ring to a fisherman who feels like he has something swimming around in his guts. Depending on how well you do, you will get a certain kind of ending. I found it interesting enough to want to play through it again to try and see what the difference in the endings was.
The Tools Of The Trade
Revenge Of The Colon is played through the first-person of us in the person's butt with our various gastroenterologist tools. These range from things that can cut to pull to wash. You will have to pull things like paper clips, a nail, and the aforementioned ring. You will have to get rid of parasites and you will also have to do a bit of microsurgery as sometimes when you pull or cut something, bleeding will start and you will need to cauterize it. You have to complete a few different objectives in each stage. I do think the game could be a bit clearer in regards to what you have to do to 100 percent complete a stage.
Going Back To 1998
The whole premise of Revenge Of The Colon is super weird, but to make this a game that well and truly sticks in the memory, they have gone for a retro art style. The game looks like something that could have been on the PlayStation 1 back in the 90s. Let me tell you, some of the stuff you will see here is really freaky! The parasites, oh my goodness, the parasites, I have a strong stomach, but there were a few moments that really grossed me out and made me jump. The “body horror” aspect of the game is sure to be something that sticks with you for a little while.
I was very impressed by what I experienced with Revenge Of The Colon. This could have been a game that just tried to skate by on being gross and weird… which it is! However, it has way more depth than you would think and the “gameplay” was fun and I found the different stories, especially as we get to the end of the week in the game, to be interesting and pretty damn shocking too. If you want an experience you will not forget in a while, I highly recommend you give this game a try.
Pros:
- If you are a fan of gross and weird body horror you will like this
- The story was way more interesting than I thought it would be
- The final twist really did shock me!
- I liked the PlayStation 1 era style presentation
Cons:
- I wish it was a bit clearer on how to fully complete a level
- It may be a bit too gross and weird for some people
