Sam & Max: This Time It's Virtual!

Sam & Max: This Time It's Virtual! Is the latest game to feature the most two awesome detectives around. As someone who has loved these two zany characters since the beginning, it is always exciting when we get to jump into this crazy world again. What is interesting about this game is that now it is in virtual reality and I had no doubts at all that the gameplay from the Sam & Max series would work great in the world of VR. The game is not yet complete, but there is a demo for you to check out.

Welcome Cadet

As you would expect from a game featuring these two, the story in Sam & Max: This Time It's Virtual! Is pretty nuts. We play as a cadet that has shown up for their first day working with Sam 7 Max and what starts off as a day of training exercises soon gets pretty out of hand and turns into an adventure to save the freaking world!

The Transition Works!

Sometimes when a beloved series makes the jump to VR something gets lost in transition, but that is not the case here at all. Sam & Max: This Time It's Virtual! Feels just like a Sam & Max game in terms of the way it looks and the way the story unfolds. The writing is fantastic and the voice acting is superb and you really do feel like you are in this world. I loved the way Max would zoom all around you. I will say that the game has a couple of little things that I think need to be addressed, none are game breaking, but sometimes characters tend to float just about the ground rather than standing on it.

Never Outstaying Its Welcome

One of the things that I feel this game does very well is keeping things interesting as you play. In the early part of the game, you will have to take care of a bomb, scale a wall, get Max some food, and more. None of what the game asks you to do is repeated at nauseum and as a result, you never have time to get bored of one particular thing the game is asking you to do. They keep the VR controls in Sam & Max: This Time It's Virtual! nice and simple and interacting with things is very easy to do and figure out.

Easing You In

The Sam & Max series is known for being difficult with mind bending puzzles and there is some of that at play here. However, I think that the pacing in this game is very well done. I say this because they ease you in at the start of the game with tasks that are quite easy to figure out.

It may start out with rather basic VR style interactions, but things get ramped up and before long you will be taking part in crazy puzzles that really will make you think.

Pros:

• The story is crazy just like you would expect
• You actually feel like you are in this world
• The writing and the voice acting is superb
• The game eases you into the gameplay

Cons:

• Some of the puzzles could be a tad too cryptic for some people
• The characters can sometimes float just above the floor
