Ever wanted to play a Silent Hill game on your phone? Well now you can. Never before has horror been so mobile. Ring! Ring! It’s a portable nightmare. Pull out your phone and download Silent Hill: The Escape by Konami for an interesting switch of platform for the horror genre.

Gameplay

Instinctively you may think this game would be garbage but it actually wants too bad. There are a few things that make the gameplay as good as it is and the biggest thing for me is the fact you tilt the device to move the camera perspective. This adds an interesting and engrossing element of immersion that is akin to Virtual Reality. It’s like playing Resident Evil 7: Biohazard in VR but way, way cheaper.

The player controls the rest of the game through the touch screen. Whether that’s movement, firing your weapon and even reloading which by itself proves as a sort of little mini game. Movement is by dragging your finger in conjunction with the camera angles. Shootings just tapping the screen but while reloading, you have to use the motion control to align the reticule with the chamber to properly reload. Rushing this can be the difference between success and game over. All that being said, the responsiveness and general gameplay was by no means perfect.

User Interface

So the user interface and heads up display for the game are prevalent yet they have also been minimised to account for the super small screen. There is a little map in the corner, a bullet count and the reload function in the others. This with the clear reticule in the middle of the screen and the presence of the directional pad when the screen is touched makes is for an easy play, much easier than I would have expected for a title like this as mobile games tend to get a nasty rep.

Classic Ambience

I really appreciated the clear Silent Hill feel and look that was present in this. Navigating your way through what appears to be the hallways of an abandoned hospital by torchlight provides that classic feel that we associate with this IP. The enemies are taken straight from the universe with the inclusion of the Evil Nurse, some weird bug crab thing, Possessed Wheelchairs and even a classic Pyramid Head and Butcher style enemies as well.

Even though it’s a mobile game, it can still give you some spooks. Playing it alone at night would still get you a jump or two and I have got to be grateful for that.

6

This is a surprisingly freaky little game and, thanks to the controls not being perfect, it actually has an interesting challenge to it too. If you like horror games, this makes for a great one that is easily accessible and makes for a great way to pass time.

Pros

  • Good atmosphere
  • Good use of screen space

Cons

  • Unresponsive UI
  • A bit too ambitious for the platform
