Sonic Lost World

Sonic Lost World is a game that I feel gets dumped on way too harshly. While thanks to things like Sonic Mania and the recently released Sonic movie, Sonic is once again “cool”. It was not always that way and all the cool kids would insist that Sonic sucked and there were no good Sonic games since the days of the Mega Drive. Well, Sonic for me has always been cool and he has far more good games under his belt than bad ones and this is most certainly not a bad game.

Enter The Sinis…. I mean Deadly Six

Sonic Lost World does actually try really hard to tell a decent story and I think that it is pretty decent for the most part. The game sees Sonic and Tails hot on Eggman’s tail. Then end up on a planet called, The Lost Hex where a group called The Deadly Six are up to no good. Sonic, Tails…. And Eggman team up to put a stop to them.

Sonic In HD

At the time this was the best that Sonic the Hedgehog had ever looked. Even now, half a decade or more later. Sonic Lost World is still a fantastic looking game. I love the overall presentation for this game and think that they did a great job with the game in that regard.

Close, But Not Quite There

The gameplay is what most people will criticize the game for and in some cases, I can see why. One thing that this game tries to do is make levels about speed and exploration. These two things are sometimes at odds with each other and the new parkour mechanics when they work are great, but sometimes you just flat outfall. The gameplay is what you would expect from a typical 3D Sonic game and one thing that I do like is the way the words have a kind of cylinder feel to it. I actually liked the exploration aspect of the game and think had they focused more on this that the parkour, Sonic Lost World could have been a very different kind of game.

PC Or Wii U???

I originally played the game on the Wii U and Sega did an awesome job in supporting the game with free DLC. On the Nintendo Wii U, Sonic Lost World added in levels based on Nights into Dreams, Yoshi and most awesomely of all, The Legend Of Zelda. I would say that the Zelda level alone makes the Wii U version an essential purchase.

On PC, you do not officially have those Nintendo levels of course, but the game has been hotly supported by the modding community. So, if you are into modding then you can certainly have some fun that way.

I would not say that Sonic Lost World is a perfect game, but it is still a fun game. It has a few annoying quirks, but once you get to grips with the game, I am sure you will find this to be a fun Sonic game. It looks like a million bucks and I really do appreciate that Sega went all-in with an interesting and kind of crazy story.

Final Score: 7.5/10

Pros:

  • The game looks phenomenal
  • I liked the exploration aspect of the game
  • The story is quite fun
  • I liked the Deadly Six
  • The game when you get the hang of it is a lot of fun

Cons:

  • Sometimes the controls do not work as they should
  • I am not sure the Nintendo exclusive content is still available
