Tangledeep by Impact Games is a 16-bit RPG dungeon crawler set in a fantasy world. Rise through the ever changing labyrinth and reach the surface of a long since forgotten world. Mystery, combat and adventure await you if you even make it that far because this game is hard. Let’s get into it.
In fantastic form, this RPG sports a customizable job system. I don’t mean you slay monsters in a gig economy; rather you choose a specific loud out/profession and fight your way through the dangers while switching it up as you please. It offers a brilliant diversity to your play styles but the combat still inevitably falls down to turn based.
Tangledeep has about 13 classes, with only 4 of them requiring being unlocked. There’s Floramancer, Paladin, Sword Dancer, Spellshaper and more, all hitting their strides in abilities. You can also capture nearly any creature you encounter and can turn them into little friends that travel and fight with you.
The difficulty can be modified, make it easier, harder or downright bizarre with more than 10 game modifiers. There is also an adventure mode, thank goodness, that stops permadeath; I would recommend this for your first go round. This game bares striking resemblance to the title Chrono Trigger, with a great combat system, fantastic characters and a gorgeous 16-bit visual style that is incredibly crisp and clear.
Also this game has mods which are amazing and you should definitely check out.
The Setting and Story
So the primary goal of this game is something of the opposite of the one we are used to. Traditionally, we start on ground level and work our way through the through dungeons, getting lower and lower until the boss or terrible secret is revealed; this time it’s the other way round. The game starts you at the bottom and you travel through the labyrinth known as Tangledeep.
The world is rich and diverse with different biomes, interesting environment, magical beasts and more. I was pleasantly surprised by how different each floor felt.
The music in this game is downright amazing. Composed by award winning Zircon, the mind behind the music of Soulcabilur V and Monkey Island 2: LeChucks Revenge Special Edition, and joined by Hiroki Kikuta, Grant Kirkhope and Norihiko Hibino; all absolute masters of their craft.
All responsible for the music behind many accomplished titles, so it’s no wonder the audio fits the game so perfectly. It’s such good music that I went ahead and downloaded the soundtrack alone and listened to it as I wrote this. This game provides an ambience that is nothing short of astounding as it elevates the entire experience to a new level of quality. Yes, the praise is really that high.
This is a fantastic addition to the genre of turn based RPG. If you enjoy these types of games, this will be a truly welcome addition to your collection.
