Like every popular cartoon franchise, the unwritten rules dictate that there must be an accompanying video game. That invisible legislation doesn't spare The Fairly Oddparents: Breakin' Da Rules, the sequel to a pretty average initial offering. Then again, we don't really expect too much for these games, do we?
Though The Fairly Oddparents is a pretty entertaining cartoon. The push to actually play these games would simply be to hear the wacky antics of Cosmo and Wanda. No matter how poor the gameplay may be. So with that in mind, we might as well check up on The Fairly Oddparents: Breakin' Da Rules to see if their game concepts got any better.
Rules Are Made To Be Broken
The title alone suggests that gameplay might be questionable. The Fairly Oddparents: Breakin' Da Rules is not one of the most elegant video game titles. But does reference the game's narrative, setting the scenes for the game. Timmy Turner wishes that 'Da Rules' of his Fairy Godparents didn't exist, and suddenly they fall into the hands of his evil babysitter. It's up to young Timmy to retrieve this so life can go on as usual.
You'd think the game is filled with monotonous levels of basic platforming, combat, and easily overcome puzzles - it's actually is more well-designed than expected. The Fairly Oddparents: Breakin' Da Rules features levels packed with mini-games, decent platforming action, and challenging obstacles. All are held together by the silliness that surrounds the cartoon.
The visuals do well to give players the idea they are playing through an episode of the show. The animations are in line with the fast pace of the characters. The dialogue certainly stays in tune with the silly banter. It does add an entertaining flair to gameplay, and surprisingly isn't covering for lack of effort in the overall mechanics.
Let's not forget this game is designed for children, so the difficulty curve is low in every aspect. However, all considered, The Fairly Oddparents: Breakin' Da Rules is pretty good. Developers have used the lore surrounding the show to create something that could mildly entertain most players.
A Simple Retribution
No, The Fairly Oddparents: Breakin' Da Rules doesn't feature the platforming prowess of Crash Bandicoot. However, it's well-constructed enough that you could pass this off as a playable asset. The developers have broken 'Da Rules' in delivering a show-based game that can entertain a different host of players.
It offers enough in all regards to providing a challenge, follow a story, and be tickled by the characters and dialogue. It's no classic, and it certainly won't be winning any awards. It's only surprising how The Fairly Oddparents: Breakin' Da Rules is quite a bit better than what you would expect from games of this stature.
Pros:
- Consistent and well-crafted level design
- Incorporates elements of the cartoon brilliantly
- Playable for a range of different gamer bases
Cons:
- The difficulty curve is low
- It won't take much time to complete the game
- The sound design feels off balance
