Every now and then, there's a game that feels like it was developed only to unleash pure mayhem. So far in early access, that's what The Slormancer feels like. It's a high-octane action RPG that lets players make up wild, fantastical attacks to unleash on hordes of enemies. Sound like a new age stress ball!
There's a little bit more to The Slormancer than just the hack and slash mechanics, though. Underneath the surface, there's an epic story, a strategic skill-building mechanic, and a whole lot of inventory. If you've caught a glimpse of the game, you'd already have an impression that the fun factor is pretty high. But is that the reality?
Want Some Slor?
It's pretty evident from the get-go that The Slormancer is a game that's not taking itself too seriously. It sets you in fantasy, pixelated environment with characters called Mighty Knight, Fierce Huntress, or Mischievous Mage. You know you're going to be in for a whale of a time when playable personas sound like cereal box characters!
The visuals are crafted to resonate with the most possible color, focusing on these creative attacks you can unleash. You'll use your own combinations of over 200 abilities, upgrades, and passive skills to hammer down on the hundreds of enemies that cross you in each level. You better believe the fun factor is high here, and combat is so much more satisfying when you're at the reigns of ability.
The upgrade and progression system is player-friendly, albeit confusing at first take. The narrative is about as cliche as you can get. However, it will still please many nostalgic console gamers with its dry wit and humor. There's certainly enough content, though, to craft your own stories as a player who goes from zero to hero.
The Slormancer feels it was made for the fun, and it indefinitely delivers. There's still room for improvement, incorporating some of the promised features and working these skill trees to make them a little bit more accessible. But it's still early days, and it definitely feels like the game is on the right path of being one of the better hack and slashes on the market!
A Frantic Ride to the Top
It's refreshing when a game is simply made for entertaining, minimizing the deep meaning and emotional rollercoaster. The Slormancer exists to give players an outlet to go on an epic adventure without any burdens weighing them down. Arguably, its theme allows players to enjoy themselves without the competitiveness or dark atmosphere like Path of Exile provides.
The accessibility behind the combat and the RPG mechanics are excellent. Still, The Slormancer does need a coat of polish to be the celebrated media it may want to be. Again, that's what early access is for. So that they can clean up the nuances for a better release. Honestly, a complete game is looking like it will provide hours of entertainment.
