Today we are checking out There Is No Light which is a Kickstarter success story and one of the more interesting looking action-RPGs to be released this year. It is fast-paced, hard as nails and it has a story that I think is very compelling and not as linear as stories tend to be in games of this style. If you are someone that enjoys action RPGs then you need to keep on reading to see why I and many other people are so high on this game right now.
I Will Save My Child!
The story There Is No Light is something I am very, very excited to get into. The game is set in a world where mankind now lives underground and has not seen the light of the sun for a long time. Mankind worships an entity known as The Great Hand.
From time to time, The Great Hand will come and take people's newborns as some kind of sacrifice/ritual. Well, they have taken yours and you are having none of it, you set out on a quest to get them back and find out what is really going on in the hidden world beyond the sanctuary. The story lets you make choices along the way so it is not a fully linear experience.
Pixel Crazy
While There Is No Light has a very emotionally driven kind of story, I think the fantastic pixel graphics really do the narrative justice. The whole game looks amazing and it has some of the best animations I have seen from a game that uses this kind of art. I love the various magic, fire, and explosive effects that can happen. I know this is an art style that has been done to death, but this game does it better than most.
Bring Them To The Slaughter!
As far as the combat goes, There Is No Light is a tough, but fair kind of game. They specifically mention the Souls games, but I got more Hades vibes from the combat if I am being honest. Your character can use four main weapons (he has other tricks up his sleeves too) and you can switch between these and you will need to a great deal. Different enemies and different bosses will require different strategies for beating them. It is a real thinking person's kind of game and one that will challenge you, but once you figure it out, the experience is very rewarding.
Fight Your Own Fight
One other thing I want to mention about the combat in There Is No Light is that the main weapons I was telling you about all have their own skill tree. These will make it so that you can play around and focus on the weapons that fit your play style best. The way that you decide to progress through the skill tree will probably be quite different from mine. I like how they encourage players to tinker with this to find what suits them best.
I have played so many pixel art action RPGs over the last few years that it can be a hard genre to get excited about anymore. Then a game like There Is No Light comes along and completely blows me away and gets me really excited for games of this type again.
I love the story that they are telling and the fact the combat has bits of the Dark Souls games and bits of Hades here is something that I am very excited about.
Pros:
- I love the story of the dad trying to save his daughter
- The story is not a linear experience
- Combat is fast-paced, fun, and very challenging
- There are tons of enemies and bosses to fight
Cons:
- If you are sick of pixel art in games, you may have a harder time warming up to this
- I am sure this is the kind of game where you will die a great deal!
