Timberborn

Timberborn is a very interesting strategy and management game that is about the lives of beavers! I am having a hard time thinking of another game that is not a lewd game that has a lot of beaver in it… ok, that was terrible and I am sorry. In all seriousness, this is a game that looks to be a great deal of fun. From what I have seen in this pre-release state (as I write this) they look like they have managed to find that middle ground between being a deep strategy game, but also being a game that is fun.

Mankind Threw It All Away

The plot of the game is that mankind is gone, we threw it all away and now the beavers are left and they want to thrive. There are two factions of beavers in Timberborn.

There are the Folktails who are more about nature, living off the land, and doing what is right by the planet. Then there are the Iron Teeth who are much more industrious and always looking to build and improve on what nature has to offer.

Building Your Beaver Society

The whole idea of the game is to build your society so that your beavers will thrive. The building aspect is really cool as you will have to build vertical structures as land is quite limited. You can stack buildings on top of each other which is what you have to do in order to have access to all that you need, but not at the expense of the land around you.

Water, The Element That Brings Life

Beavers are all about building dams and Timberborn has that here. Water plays a very important part in the game. You will have to build dams and floodgates as well as digging brand new canals to make sure water is going where you need it to go. There will be droughts so careful planning is required as a bad drought can cause dire consequences for your beavers. You need to make sure that the forests and your food have as much water as they need.

Scavenging The Old World

These beavers want to grow with the times and this means that they want to build stuff like water wheels and engines to make sure that their society thrives. The thing is while wood is great for most things, many of the more “advanced” structures that the beavers can make require metal, and the way you get this is by sending beavers out on missions to scavenge from the old world.

A Happy Beaver Is A Productive Beaver

As well as working really hard, beavers need to have a good life too. In Timberborn, you also have to make sure that your beavers are happy. The most basic need that needs to be met is their food, but a place to sleep, fun decorations, and various activities are also required to ensure that they have a well-balanced life, and work is not all they are living for.

I am very excited for Timberborn to be fully finished. I think the idea of this game is very clever and it has a ton of charm to it. If you enjoy strategy games then I think this has to be one that you take a closer look at. It may look fun and cute as it is about beavers, but you will be surprised at just how deep the gameplay here is.

Pros:

  • This is a game that is about beavers in the future and that is awesome!
  • There are two beaver societies
  • You have many important decisions to make
  • I like the idea of sending beavers to the old world to scavenge for supplies

Cons:

  • Some of the animations are a tad jerky at this early stage
  • As with most other strategy games, there will be a learning curve here
