RAILGRADE offers a twist on the construction strategy game by tasking players with creating railway networks. The unreleased game is bound for a 2021 release, by developer Minakata Dynamics and published by The Irregular Corporation for Windows Exclusively.
Take Them There
The premise of RAILGRADE is an interesting one, even if not groundbreaking. Humanity has evolved enough to develop off-world cities that need deliverables from your planet. The main goal is to connect those cities and their industries with valuable resources. As a player you are the last employee of a colony owned by a corporation, and you just received some awful news, a massive management error has nearly collapsed the entire planet’s economy.
You are then tasked with using every piece of material, machinery and production tactics at your disposal to deliver your resources and restore the economy’s health.
The main way players connect your company’s colony to other distant planets is through railroad tracks. You are free to choose when, how and what to build to create a functional logistic distribution grid. On top of that the strategic part requires you to manage your resources, final products, workflow, and workers as best as you can to keep a steady influx of deliverables. Choosing the right terrains to build are also essential to ensuring your company’s financial success. Finally, successful endeavors will allow you to reinvest into new trains, new engines, lawyers firms, and reach out to new industries to expand your reach.
Long and Lonely Road
RAILGRADE is a single-player game that challenges you intellectually to study, analyze and propose the best solution for over thirty scenarios. The campaign mode offers over thirty missions that will bring you closer to satisfying your contract and bringing your planet’s economy positive results. Once players are done with the campaign, they can take on new challenges with the standalone “Contract” missions. These different missions offer unique goals, and scenarios that are not seen in the regular campaign.
The game looks surprisingly polished, and requires moderate requirements to run. The level of detail is also high, as players have access to a cinematic view mode that lets them experience their own created empires from unique angles. RAILGRADE also offers challenging managerial decisions that stray away from other city building games that focus exclusively on building. RAILGRADE also offers unique customization options to ensure your company, resources, trains and cargos have a personalized appearance.
Conclusion
There are various simulators and city-building titles out there, and RAILGRADE doesn’t unearth a brand new genre, or usher in a new era for simulation-strategy games. However this is a very polished game, that offers a campaign mode, and diverse challenges for strategists out there.
Gamers that enjoy titles such as SimCity 4, Cities: Skylines, or Tropico 5 will surely enjoy RAILGRADE.
