If you’re a fan of trains then get ready because Railroad Corporation by Corbie Games will really add some coal to that fire. Take on the golden age of steam and establish your own railroad company that spans across 19th century North America. It’s up to you to deliver quickly and outpace competition to bring budding settlements together and assist them in creating new trade goods, produce and new technologies.
In this title, it’s up to you to figure out how you’re going to create and expand a railroad empire into the farthest reaches of North America. You will be playing the owner and seemingly the only person who knows how to operate your company as you control and combine resources, establish new industries and even engage in a little politics as you ensure you can lobby politicians into changing the law of the land to make it easier for you to do your job.
As you expand, it will be up to you to make sure everything is going where it needs to go, that you can source and afford all the necessary materials as well as laying down tracks and building bridges, literally and figuratively, to benefit your company and the country as a whole.
There is a great amount of control afforded to the player to ensure that you can play this title exactly the way you want to, it’s something I found freeing and it inspired me to keep playing. There are elements here reminiscent of Transport Fever or Trainz Railroad Simulator 2019, and its just as well done.
This game provides the player a generous amount of detail that makes the whole thing much easier to follow. All the character profiles are easy to view, the trains have an excellent amount of detail and the environments are stunning. One thing I found to be brilliant was the ‘theme’ of the user interface. Everything holds to the theme of the time, copper trim and dark colours with that classic font on the front. It keeps you grounded in the time and makes it easier to believe you are doing what the game says you are and that’s something that many titles struggle with.
Co-op is here! Something that most games benefit from and this is are no different. You can work together on the same goals fulfil contracts but the payout will only go to the one who signed it, meaning that communication and understanding is key, especially given that the game will end if even one of you fails.
This adds a brilliant new diversity to its play style and offers a delightful amount of replayability for you.
If you enjoy games where it’s up to you to stay on top of every detail of your company then this is for you. There’s a lot of gameplay here and its all wrapped up in a delightful vintage package.
- Fantastic art style
- Smooth gameplay
- Can have stretches of not doing anything
- Co op can be a friendship ruiner
