Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus
The most recent reboot of Wolfenstein was something very special and Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus is a very special kind of game too! This follows on from The New Order very well and it is one of the most polished first-person shooters to be released in quite some time.
Shooting, Swearing, And Sex!
The story of Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus is actually very well told. It follows on from the events of the first game very well. This time around, after saving the day in the previous game, BJ is a bit of a broken man, however, he has no time to waste as once again he needs to kill a bunch of Nazis and save the day. Ok so I am simplifying the plot a great deal, however, Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus has a story that you really need to experience for yourself. It is very over the top and is certainly a very mature game in its content. I do feel that to get the most out of the story, you need to have played The New Order first. As this game really fleshes out the characters more that were in that game as well as making sure the new ones have a lot of story to them too. Actually, BJ even has a lot more back story this time around which is cool.
Polished But Predictable
In talking about the gameplay for Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus I really want to get across what a well-made first-person shooter this is. Seriously this is one of the most polished FPS games I have played in quite some time and it does what it does very, very well. However, on the flip side of that, you would have to say that it is not doing anything “groundbreaking” and it is rather by the numbers.
That, I know makes it sound bad or that I am putting the game down. I am not, far from it. This is a great experience filled with plenty of awesome weapons and upgrades. I like how they did not reinvent the wheel when it comes to the gameplay as they had a solid foundation to work on. Still, some might feel that overall Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus is not offering anything radically new in terms of its gameplay. Most of the excitement comes from the story and there are some huge set pieces and twists that will blow your mind, especially if you played through The New Order.
What A Fight!
One of the most surprising things about the game for me was how challenging it was. This is a game that does not hold your hand and until you can upgrade, you will be taking a beating as BJ seems to die pretty darn easily. This along with the way the checkpoints are spread out makes getting through this game a much harder challenge than it was in The New Order. I can see some people getting frustrated on occasion, but it is not something that spoils the game or anything like that.
While it may not win any awards for originality, I had an awesome time with Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus. It is actually a game that I feel is essential to play if you played The New Order. If you have not played that, play that first then this. It is a challenging experience, but the story is so good that you will want to see it through to the very end!
