"What if" fictional scenarios have been an incredible source for stories in war games. Since most of the armed wars have already been covered in video games, it can be much more interesting to play in an original conflict that's never been seen before. Homefront: The Revolution is a title developed by Dambuster Studios and Deep Silver, released for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. This guerrilla warfare comes as a new twist to the series, so let's see what this game is all about!

About the game

In the dystopian world of Homefront: The Revolution, North Korea has begun production of technology that's purchased by the rest of the world. Their economy grows rapidly and their technology got so good that the United States decides to start supplying their army with North Korean equipment.

The American army orders so much equipment that their debt grows to never-before-seen levels, and they unilaterally refuse to pay the Asian country for the equipment. The North Korean government decides to deactivate all the equipment sold to the US and proceed to invade the country. Suppressing most of the American population under their control.

Since North Korea completely controls the country and has disarmed the American army, this won't be a fair battle situation for the Americans. You'll play as a guerrilla soldier, and you'll have to do a lot of strategic attacks and movements if you plan to succeed in making America free again. While the North Korean use drones, advanced weaponry, surveillance equipment, and armor, you'll be the underdog. But you're not unarmed, there's a lot you can do if you're bold enough to risk it all.

The starting point in Homefront: The Revolution is one of the best and most interesting parts of this game. Even considering that the story doesn't really go any further into development than this, it is already so original and interesting that it makes for an exciting start.

A new beginning

Homefront: The Revolution is a reset point for the entire Homefront franchise that started back in 2011 aiming to compete against the war game giant Call of Duty. Back then, the Homefront games focused more on the linear campaign with an intense, competitive multiplayer. And even though it sold relatively well, it fell far behind the bigger names. This time, Homefront took a 180 turn with gameplay that feels more like a Far Cry title, with an open world and cooperative multiplayer.

Review: 6/10

Homefront: The Revolution is an interesting title, however, it is plagued by problems. The game development was incredibly troubled, facing bankruptcy of the parent company THQ, being purchased later on by Crytek, and somehow ended up in the hands of Deep Silver and Dambuster.

This is why even though the game has such great momentum early on, it loses it all through the game, and you start to see the problems in the development as you play the game. This is something that should never happen, as it messes up the entirety of the game experience for the player.
