A Plague Tale: Requiem

I am so excited about A Plague Tale: Requiem! I slept on the first game for ages and thanks to PlayStation Plus, I eventually played through the PS5 version of the game a few months ago. That got me pretty pumped up for this sequel which once again has Amicia and Hugo trying their best to survive in a bleak and terrifying world. Today I want to take a closer look at what we can expect from this game and also show you why I am so excited for it.

A Quest For Hope

Granted not much has been given away in regards to the story, but if the ending of the first game is anything to go by, A Plague Tale: Requiem is going to be something gripping and epic. We know that Amicia and Hugo are still together and that they are on the run, just trying to find a place that is safe and that they can call home.

Well, they are being chased by a horrible curse, and just like before millions of rats with their little claws and teeth are always close by.

Viva La France

I love the setting of the first game where Amicia and Hugo were on the run from the English soldiers in ancient France as they try to come to terms with Hugo’s powers. It looks as though, A Plague Tale: Requiem is going to have a very similar setting this time around. You have to wonder if the inquisition is even more determined to get their hands on these two now that Hugo’s secret is pretty much known by all!

That Next Generation Shine

Even though they have been pretty cagy with what they have shown so far, the cinematic that we have seen for the game is pretty spectacular stuff. Even though there is still going to be a version for the Xbox One, you can tell that things have been kicked up a few notches in the visual department. The infamous rat swarm of the original game was a real sight to behold so with this extra power I am sure it is going to be even creepier this time around.

Two Become One

It is going to be very interesting to see how the gameplay of A Plague Tale: Requiem evolves over the first game. We mainly played as Amicia in the first game, using stealth to get around, solve puzzles, and of course, avoid the plague of rats!

When we got to control Hugo at the end of the game it was a real change of pace and that is going to be interesting to see what they do in this game. With full control of his powers, you have to wonder what he is going to be able to make the rats do!

After I beat the first game, I was kind of mad at myself for putting it off so long. It truly was a memorable experience and a story that well and truly got its hooks in me and made me care about the characters. I am very excited to dive into A Plague Tale: Requiem when the game is actually finished, I will admit I am more excited to see what they have done with Hugo and how the dynamic between him and Amicia may have changed with him getting control of his powers.

Pros:

  • The game looks fantastic
  • The story follows on directly after the events of the first game
  • I have a feeling we will get more playtime as Hugo
  • I love the setting of the game

Cons:

  • You will need to have played the first game before this
  • They have not given us any hints as to when the game will be fully released

Game Reviews

A Plague Tale: Requiem takes everything set up in the first game, and makes it way better. People weren’t expecting much from the first title, but it was a success, meaning the game industry was having very high hopes for this sequel. Luckily for the story of the indie videogames, A Plague Tale: Requiem is a better game than its prequel.

A Work of Art

A Plague Tale: Requiem has a genuine care for the details that you can notice since the start; the graphics are perfect and the whole map has details that make the game feel like it’s happening in real life. You can notice it whenever the game gives you some time to take a look at the big mountains, or when you are inside an abandoned warehouse filled with rats while solving a puzzle that involves fire. Basically, this game is delightful to see. You can’t get tired of it. The best part of A Plague Tale: Requiem is its cinematics; they are well done, even to the point where Asobo Studios makes you think they aren’t just video game developers but also artists. You can clearly read the expressions of Hugo and Amicia, you can see them worried, happy, or sad, and it means that the developers really spent a lot of time working on it. They feel human.

And don’t you dare think this only happens with the protagonists; every character in the game feels really alive. You can take a screenshot of the game and it’ll look like a work of art from a very reputable artist that has to be exposed to the best museums in the world!

The Aftermath of the Inquisition

The story of A Plague Tale: Requiem starts shortly after the last events of A Plague Tale: Innocence. Amicia, the protagonist, her little brother, Hugo, her mother, Beatrice, and her best friend, Lucas, gets some quiet peace after getting rid of the inquisition hunters.

Now, the main issue is to cure Hugo’s “sickness”, so the group heads to Province to meet with the Order of Alchemists, when suddenly, Hugo’s sickness attacks again; this time, with far more rats!

The hunters appear again, and our protagonists have to sail into another journey, this time, trying to find the island Hugo is constantly seeing in his visions.

A Plague Tale: Requiem’s most valuable asset is its narrative; every major character that interacts with Amicia and Hugo (including themselves) has a well-established personality. But, of course, the main spotlight gets robbed by Amicia and Hugo, and their quest for knowing where the rats, and therefore, Hugo’s powers, come from.

This game is a must-play. It’ll be a classic game after some time, and will be a game everyone will remember. For sure, it’ll be relevant, and a good project to compare others with. In short, A Plague Tale: Requiem is a masterpiece.
