Persona 4 Golden

Persona 4 is one of the most popular Japanese RPG’s of all times, with rave reviews from nearly everyone who has picked up the game. Persona 4 was originally released in 2008 to great success, and has been released with high-definition graphics and better frame rates for nostalgic players to enjoy.

The game opens in a Japanese town called Inaba, where you are a high school student. Your quiet life is abruptly shattered by a series of murders in your town. It turns out someone is killing people by throwing them into something called, “The Midnight Channel,” which is essentially the player’s subconscious.

In order to win the game, you must achieve a delicate balance between being a normal high schooler in the real world, and battling monsters in the other dimension. The real world is just as important as the Midnight Channel and can’t be neglected, as your ties in the real world strengthen your combat abilities in the other dimension.

Card Games and Combat

Combat in the game is fairly basic, with monsters in the game vulnerable to different elemental weaknesses. One aspect of the game that adds an original twist however, is the random mini-game that pops up every now and again. In the card game, you are asked to draw one of 5 tarot cards. These cards can give you boosts—or cut your money in half. It’s surprisingly fun but also very random.

Characters never get tired

If you’ve played Persona 3, you may have some expectations of the game—but some big changes have occurred between these two in the series. Characters don’t get tired in the dungeon in Persona 4, which means you can explore to your hearts content.

Another key difference between the two games is that the dungeons are definitely smaller. This makes it easier in some respects—everything happens more quickly, but also its pitfalls. The faster pace of finding and saving characters leads to you waiting around for the plot to catch up.

Saving options not up to standards

One tiny flaw with the game is that you can only save at certain points. Those points are right before the boss fight and at the dungeon exits. This greatly limits your ability to level, since if you just want to hop in for a few minutes to level some characters, you’ll find yourself unable to save.

It’s worth noting that this save feature is fixed later in the series - Persona 5 allows you to save when ever you want.

The Persona series has always captivated with its unique roots in Jungian theory. Persona 4 is a great improvement on the past games, while still being well tied into the original idea of personas. If you’re looking for a truly innovated Japanese RPG, Persona 4 will take you on a deep dive that truly inspires and entertains.

Pros:

  • Fresh, original content
  • Exciting plot

Cons:

  • Lack of save points
  • Too easy to get characters
