Aragami 2 is a really cool ninja game that heavily relies on stealth and thinking before you act. This is one of those games that I was really surprised managed to get a sequel, but I was really happy when it was announced. If you like playing as a sneaky ninja and interesting ninja Esq stories, then this is a game that you are certainly going to have a great deal of fun with.
Defending Your Kin!
I thought that the story and the whole premise of the game was really neat. There have been some great ninja games recently and I would put this one up there in terms of the story.
In Aragami 2 you play as an elite ninja assassin, one of the last of the Aragami clan, a clan that specializes in using the shadows to their advantage. An invading army has taken most of your kin and it is on you to get them back and kill them all!
If you come into this game expecting to play it like Ninja Gaiden where you hack and slash your way through enemies, you are not going to have a very good time. This game is all about stealth and sneaking around. You can double jump, run fast, do parkour, and do all the things you would expect a ninja to be able to do. Each area is like a playground for you to figure out who to complete your objectives.
Remember how I said this clan uses the shadows to their advantage? Well, I mean that they do more than just hide in them. Aragami 2 allows you to basically teleport, it is kind of like the blink ability from Dishonored. You use this along with all your athletic ninja moves to get around and get the jump on enemies, but it also comes in handy for getting out of tricky situations as well. You have a stamina system so you cannot abuse it, but rather than hinder you, it makes things more fun and skill based.
Die By The Sword!
While sneaking around in Aragami 2 is a great deal of fun at the end of the day you are a ninja and you are going to get into fights. Taking on an enemy one-on-one is manageable and the combat in the game is more about timing than it is just hitting the button over and over again. It is when there are more than one enemy at a time taking you on things get hard, like really, really hard! Your best bet here is usually teleporting away, hiding, and then picking them off one by one!
I think that Aragami 2 is a great game and a really fun ninja experience. I just think that you have to know coming into this that it is a game that needs to be played with stealth and not brute force. I think those trying to Ninja Gaiden their way through this game are not going to have a great time. It may be a tad rough around the edges in the visual department, but this is a very fun ninja simulator that for the right person is going to be one of the best games of the year.
- I thought the story the game was telling was quite interesting
- I love the idea of this shadow ninja clan
- Using your moves to sneak around is a great deal of fun
- It is cool how this is a game based more on skill than button mashing
- The visual presentation is a little bit rough in places
- Combat against more than one enemy can feel a tad unfair
