While the name, Ninja Simulator is not exactly the coolest sounding name for a game. Any game that lets you play as a ninja is cool in my book. I have been playing as a ninja since the days of my Atari 2600 and it is something that never gets old. There have been some amazing games that let you play as a ninja these days, but this one looks like it is trying to go that extra mile to really make you feel like a ninja!
Your Sword Is For Hire
The game has a feudal Japan setting which is pretty damn awesome. We play as a ninja hence the name, Ninja Simulator. The idea of the game is that you are regarded as the greatest ninja around and you have been hired by people to complete various missions.
The missions have a fair bit of variety to them, but they ultimately revolve around sneaking and killing. I think the premise is pretty cool, but it is lacking that big epic story like you get in something like Ninja Gaiden for example.
The Dark And The Light
I am very impressed with the way that Ninja Simulator looks. Ninjas need to sneak around the shadows and that is replicated very well here. Of course, the feudal Japan setting is great and they have done a very good job here. What really makes this so great is the clever use of lighting. The areas are nice and dark so you can sneak and do all of your ninja stuff, but then there are areas that are lit up where you can make use of the shadows to locate enemies and hide. It is very cool stuff and gives the game a very authentic kind of atmosphere.
The Way Of The Ninja
The game is very stealth based where you have to sneak and use the shadows to get through each mission. Some missions may have you needing to get through a couple of people and others may have a whole army that is standing in your way.
You have different ninja weapons to use ranging from a sword to throwing stars and what is interesting about the combat is that it is very skill and timing based. You have to be accurate with your strikes as if you fail to take an enemy down quickly, they can alert others to your premise.
If you like ninjas and stealth games then Ninja Simulator is the game for you. I get some very Tenchu vibes (remember that game series?) from this as it has such a heavy emphasis on stealth. The way it lets you sneak around and take down the enemies in the way that suits you is very cool and certainly goes a very long way to making you feel like you are a ninja. If you want a ninja game that is more of a “thinking persons” game than a hack and slash there are not many better than this.
