Asphalt 3D

Asphalt 3D is a 2012 racing game that allows players to race various sports cars around a variety of different tracks. Although the game comes from a long-running series of reliable racer games, Asphalt 3D gives off a bad impression from the very beginning.

The intro itself glitches, lags, and makes players feel as if they’re watching a sneak preview of the game rather than a teaser. If players manage to overlook this, the first race will certainly have them falling flat. The game throws players into the first race without any kind of tutorial or instruction for which keys do what. Players are simply asked to figure it out by themselves, as fast as possible. While the controls aren’t anything unusual for a racing game, it may be very difficult for a player new to the genre.

On top of this, all the boosts and what to do if you crash are all completely unexplained. Players must figure everything out for themselves from the very beginning.

Lackluster Graphics

The graphics themselves could also do with an improvement. The graphics are only marginally better than you would find in a free-to-play mobile game, but lag as if they’re the most dramatically detailed cars in the world. When racing along trying to finish first, cars in front of you only become visible when they are just a few inches from your cars front bumper, making it incredibly difficult to avoid them. When contact is made, players crash, and are forced to start at the back of the pack.

The crashes themselves show how poorly designed the game is. The crash happens in slow motion, and other cars often pass through each other or glitch out in the background. It’s as if the game’s AI can’t figure out where they are supposed to be during a crash.

If a crash happens, winning is almost impossible, because it takes time to get back up to full speed.

Unlockable Content

One positive aspect to this game is the generous number of unlockables in the game. There are over 40 unlockable cars in the game, and they do look cool - when they’re not moving anyway. The game offers more unlockable content than any comparable game, including Ridge Racer, a racing game released at the same time, but struggles a bit less.

Plenty To Do

If you can look past the lagging, the weird crashes, and the lack of instructions, Asphalt 3D can be fun. The game does offer three different gameplay modes, as well as a variety of different tracks to play on. The game also allows local multiplayer of up to 6 people, so it can be a fun game to have at parties or when friends are over.

6

This is an older game, and really shouldn’t be compared to modern racers. Even so, Asphalt 3D was not a well-received game even when it first came out. Asphalt 3D had a lot of great ideas, but executed them badly. This game might be worthwhile for players who want a game that takes them back, but be prepared for a struggle with the gameplay.

Pros:

  • Plenty to do
  • Tracks are unique and look different
  • Lots of unlockable content

Cons:

  • Lags badly
  • Crashes are unsightly and glitch
  • Sound and graphics are sub-par
