Barbie as the Island Princess is a video game that was released to coincide with a straight to DVD movie of the same name back in 2007. What is kind of weird about this is that at the time it was released as well as there being versions for systems like the Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS. For some reason, a version of the Gameboy Advance was released as well and that is what we are looking at today.
What Is Going On?
The best I can tell, the game tries to in a way follows the plot of the movie. Barbie is on an island and she has a lot to see and do and of course, dresses to wear. There is a little bit of plot here, but it is not exactly mind-blowing stuff. Still to be fair to the folks behind the game. The little bit of plot that is here does link things together better than you would think.
With a game like Barbie as the Island Princess, you know that the presentation is a key part of it. What is interesting is the visual style they went for. It is very, very hard to describe the way that Barbie looks in this game. As strange as it sounds the best comparison for visuals is WWE Road To WrestleMania X8 for the Gameboy Advance. Both that game and this one uses the same kind of animation style to try and make the characters look real.
Full honesty here, before I started my playthrough of Barbie as the Island Princess I would have put 50 bucks on this being a side view platform game. Well, I would have lost as this is a collection of mini-games and a ton of them at that! I was seriously surprised at how many mini-games make this thing up. One will see fruit be thrown by an elephant onto a trampoline and you have to catch it. There is a fishing game, a silhouette matching game and a game where you need to take the right food to the right barrel. There is even a weird DDR style rhythm game as well. None of the games are what I would call amazing, but with so many on offer and the fact they last a couple of minutes tops. It does at least keep things from getting boring. As this is a Barbie game, getting Barbie to look like a million bucks is the ultimate goal. You can earn new dresses and items which you can then dress her up with inside the dressing room. I am sure for fans of Barbie this must be awesome.
Clearly, Barbie as the Island Princess is a game that is aimed at little girls who are Barbie fans. To be fair, it does what it does fairly well and I am sure a kid who loves to play with Barbie dolls is going to be entertained here thanks to the variety of the mini-games that are on offer.

- It is only worth playing if you like Barbie
- Some of the mini-games are boring like the fishing one
