Blind Fate: Edo no Yami

Japanese culture is so rich and interesting that countless movies, games, and TV shows use it in some way to influence their aesthetic, even if the subject matter isn’t inherently Japanese. This tactic can be hit or miss, but it always lands when it is done tastefully. Combining the legacy and aesthetic of Edo-period Japan with the neon techno-future of cyberpunk is Blind Fate: Edo no Yami.

Created by Troglobyte Games and published by 101XP, Blind Fate: Edo no Yami is an intense 2.5D side-scrolling action game. Fight through waves of increasingly powerful robots, use tech to traverse the world, and experience crushing, cinematic finishing moves. If you’re a fan of Japanese culture, robots, and violence, then here is everything you need to know about Bling Fate: Edo no Yami.

Mixing Tradition with Technology

The world of Blind Fate: Edo no Yami is the perfect blend of Japan and sci-fi. Cyberpunk 2077-esque cities blend into traditional Japanese temples, which also blend into vast factories that produce wave after wave of destructive machines.

Even one of the primary game mechanics mixes both of these worlds. The main character of the game wears a traditional Oni mask that scans the environment and creates a simulation. This is the only way you are able to navigate, as this character has had their sight taken away from them. It’s a great concept, incredibly cool, and wholly unique. This is what Blind Fate is all about.

Fighting Blind

Despite the lack of vision and dubious accuracy of the simulations you traverse (some simulations might be missing that giant hole in the floor), you are still an unstoppable warrior. Equipped with an arsenal of sensors, you will find enemies’ weak spots and strike them to eliminate them quickly.

These sensors are represented by a series of different vision modes. Different machines will require different approaches, so proceed carefully. The Mask of the Oni is powerful, but it won’t save you if you become reckless. Sometimes a cautious approach is the best one, even if you feel properly prepared to fight.

Mechanical Menace

The many different kinds of robots you’ll face in Blind Fate aren’t just generic automatons. They are all renditions of iconic creatures from Japanese folktales. Combat encounters with each of these monsters are wholly unique, complete with their own cinematic finisher animations.

Each encounter is not just about combat. Every experience in Blind Fate: Edo no Yami serves to further progress the story, and fill the player in with information that will flesh out the world around them. There’s no need for compendiums or wikis here, the game freely shares its information as you move forward.

Pros

  • Great setting and characters with plenty of personality
  • Incredible combat mechanics that are easy to learn but with plenty of depth
  • Dozens of robot designs and all of them are extremely cool
  • The violent finishing moves are always a treat

Cons

  • The game is quite short
  • The 2.5D perspective can feel a little limiting in some situations
