In the last years, roguelikes and roguelites have become common in the indie video game scene. Going for everything in one game has got tons of players hooked into some of the most successful games of the moment. But making them unique also depends on how you mix them up with other game genres, that's where you strike gold. Deadlink is the latest game by developer Guby Entertainment, and it's one of these games that went for combining the FPS mechanics with the Roguelite style of game. This Polish indie game promises to bring a lot of fast-paced action, gore, and style, along with tons of customization.
So, we know a little about how it plays, but what is Deadlink all about and how does it compare with the other games in a similar range? Well, let's talk about that!
About the game
The premise is as follows: as in every cyberpunk world, megacorporations are at the center of everything, and your job will be to make things difficult for them. You are part of the Corporate Security Agency, and your objective is to screw up the most gruesome plans of these companies using the most violent methods. At your service you will have what you would expect from a game like this: a multitude of weapons, modifiers for them, skills, and powerups that you can get with the resources you obtain in each mission, creating your builds and building your character around your play style.
With a wide variety of enemies that will vary their play style and the challenges they present depending on the corporation you face, Deadlink promises frenetic gameplay and a lot of customization. We still don't know when the definitive version will be available, but we do know that it will be available on Steam Early Access early next year.
How does it compare?
Games like Deadlink have to find a clear way to stand out from other similar games if they really want to make it into the public eye. It takes clear inspiration from games like Doom and Bulletstorm, both games with a lot of violence and an emphasis on action. The similarities between them are obvious, and the first thing that comes to mind is how much fun they were back in the day. However, there's a big difference between nostalgia and how fun the game actually is. And of course, with the crazy cyberpunk style it obviously reminds us of Cyberpunk 2077, even though it's not similar to that game, it borrows a lot of the same inspiration Cyberpunk 2077 used in the making of the game world. The main differences here are that Deadlink is a bit more straightforward in its approach, while Cyberpunk 2077 offers a lot more freedom in terms of how you choose to approach missions.
That said, it seems like Deadlink has found a pretty good niche for itself in the market, and it definitely has potential. It's a shame that it hasn't been released yet, but we're sure that it will be worth the wait.
Deadlink is a nice-looking game, it has great designs and the gameplay is pretty fun, but there's more to making a truly great game. The combat is very repetitive, and it doesn't feel as satisfying as it should. That being said, it's a promising game, and it looks like it could turn out to be quite fun once it gets polished up. So keep your eyes peeled for it because we're sure that you'll enjoy it.
