Blue Reflection

It would be so easy to pass Blue Reflection off as just another Koei Tecmo “Waifu” style of game. While to be fair… it is another Koei Tecmo Waifu game, it does more than enough to stand on its own and be its own little thing that clearly takes inspiration from other games, but is trying to tell its own story with its own style. What initially made me interested in this game was the comparisons it was getting to stuff like Sailor Moon and Persona.

You Are A Reflector!

I am not talking about those things you had on your bike when you were a kid that let cars see you in the dark! This is a story about a young teenager called, Hinako. Hinako wanted to be a dancer, but an injury changed that and also forced her to miss the start of school.

When she does start school sisters, Yuzu and Lime help her after she is transformed into this magical and mystical realm. They tell her that she is a reflector and she needs to stop evil creatures that can destroy people’s emotions. Look, Blue Reflection has a story that on paper sounds really strange, and like it would be hard to follow. However, I do have to say that while you are playing the game it does all make sense. I tried to explain the story to a buddy of mine recently and it is near impossible to do it justice in words. I am not saying it is the greatest story in the world, but it is more than interesting enough to keep you interested.

Get Ready For Battle

This game has a very interesting battle system. At the top of the screen, there is this timeline that dictates who gets to go next. Different attacks can let you attack quicker and you can even knock your opponent back so it takes them longer to take a turn. The combat system in Blue Reflection is fun, unique, and something that does take a while to master, but once you do you can unleash some pretty devastating attacks. The only thing I was not a massive fan of in the battles was how you could not use any items! You have to use them before a battle takes place. You do get all your MP and HP back after a battle though.

Where Is My XP?

I found the way that Blue Reflection to be rather interesting. Instead of getting XP after each battle that you take part in. This game dishes out XP after you do tasks, this means that taking on side quests is something that is highly encouraged. It is different than what most other RPGs do, but this is a system that works and helps you get more invested in the story as you are dealing with more characters.

Going For That Contemporary Style

I thought that it was pretty cool how this game instead of being set in a fantasy world is going for a more realistic setting. The game taking place mainly in a high-school was really cool and when the “magical” stuff does happen it feels more special. It makes for a very good-looking game. The three main characters all have a ton of charm (and bouncy boobs of course) and the game is just a joy to look at. I just wish that the framerate did not stutter as it can do this more often than you would think!

The music in the game is just as good as the graphics. When you are walking around the school talking to people and so on, it has a more calming kind of sound. When a battle happens, it kicks things up a notch. Each piece of music in the game has been perfectly selected for the right moment.

I had a great time with Blue Reflection and think it is one of the more interesting RPGs from Koei Tecmo. The story is interesting, the three main characters all have a ton of charm and get pretty fleshed out as you progress. Plus, the combat system in this game is one that is really cool. It is deep and takes a while to get the hang of, but once you do it is a lot of fun.

Pros:

  • The game has a very interesting story
  • I liked the more realistic setting
  • It features some very interesting and well-written characters
  • The battle system is very unique
  • You are in for a fun, but challenging time with this

Cons:

  • The frame rate can drop quite significantly
  • You have to use items before, not during battles
