With Dark Rose Valkyrie being an RPG from Compile and having some of the artists from the Tales Of series doing the art. It is easy to see why so many people were very, very excited about this game. It is not a bad game by any means, but many people are shocked when they watch gameplay footage and then find out this is a PC and PS4 game and it is not running on a mobile device!
The Chimera Squad
The premise of the game was something that I thought was really cool. In Dark Rose Valkyrie you play as the leader of the ACID which stands for Anti Chimera Intercept Division. Humanity has become threatened by the chimera virus which turns people into monsters. You need to lead your quad into battles to try and fight back this alien threat.
The story starts off pretty good and I liked how there was a bit of humor sprinkled around here. The problem with the story is not that it is “bad” it is just it goes on way too long! This is a typical 50 hour or so RPG and I honestly feel they could have cut this in half and the story would have been all the better for it.
What Generation Is This From?
Let me start by saying that the character designs in Dark Rose Valkyrie are great. They look fantastic and they are nicely detailed. The rest of the game though is really lacking, it is like they had a really strict budget and blew the majority of it on the characters. The levels are very empty and low detailed, the dungeons feature the same few types of enemies and the frame rate can drop into the teens at places! It is quite surprising that this is a game that was built with the PlayStation 4 in mind. I honestly would believe that this was a game that was running on the PlayStation Vita or the PlayStation 3, perhaps even the PSP!
One thing that I have to give Dark Rose Valkyrie a ton of credit for is the voice acting. You can have Japanese or English voice acting and both are great. I had the English voice acting on and I was very impressed with it. It really did a great job of bringing these characters to life and the sections of the game that were supposed to be funny really did make me laugh.
Remember how I said the story would have been better if the game was about half the length. Well, that rings even more true for the gameplay. This is a turn-based RPG and the combat is a lot of fun. Each character has their own moves that they can do and there is this cool and rather interesting stacking system where you can stack attacks. You can even do an auto-battle option if you want. So, the combat in the game is fine, but the game as a whole gets old pretty fast.
You just follow the same formula over and over again, the side quests that you have to do are just so boring and most of the time they are things that you have already done. It makes the game become very repetitive very early on which for a game that can last around 50 hours is not a good thing.
I would not say that what they have done with Dark Rose Valkyrie is bad. There is certainly some good here. I liked the idea of the story; the voice acting was great and the combat could be fun. I just feel that they padded this game out way too much. I would probably have scored this a point and a half higher had the game been half the length. I just started to get bored very quickly.
