Cave Story+ is a classic Metroidvania that was developed by a single person, Daisuke “Pixel” Amaya, over the course of 5 years, where he only worked on the game in his free time. The first version of the game was released in 2004 on the internet, entirely free. It gained traction and acclaim across the internet for its high level of polish, excellent writing and characters, and gameplay that would stand the test of time. Most people couldn’t believe that the game was made by a single person because of its relatively high quality, and many still consider it to be the blueprint for what indie games can and should be. A Revamped Classic

Cave Story+ follows the same story as the original 2004 game. You play as Quote, an amnesiac robot, as he shoots and platforms his way through cave systems, meeting amazing characters who reveal more information about the world as well as Quote himself. Along the way, you are able to gain new powers and abilities through weapon upgrades by grabbing experience crystals. These upgraded powers will allow you to access new areas of the caves you explore, in keeping with its Metroid inspiration. The new areas you gain access to can contain other helpful upgrades like more health and missiles. You will need to do your best to obtain every upgrade possible if you hope to get Quote out of his cavernous tomb.

Tons Of New Features

New features for the “+” version of Cave Story include the option to switch between the original graphics and new HD graphics, and a remastered version of the fantastic soundtrack. It also benefits from the many enhancements made by the WiiWare port of Cave Story, including more modern character models, several new game modes including Wind Fortress and Boss Rush, along with several others. A total of 10 upgradeable weapons can be obtained throughout the game’s 15 levels that cover a vast world map. Test your skills and the destructive capabilities of your weapons by engaging in 20 ferocious boss battles. Leave no stone unturned to unlock one of four possible endings, with the other three being unlockable through successive replays of the adventure.
