Cavern of Dreams is one of those games that I knew I had to play as soon as I saw the first trailer. There are many retro inspired games these days, but this one here actually looks and feels like it could have been released on the Nintendo 64 back in 1998! Anyone who grew up playing on that console and has fond memories of the classic platformers that were huge on there is going to just eat this up.

Inspired By The Classics

As I just said, what we have here with Cavern of Dreams is a game that is designed to be like those classic platform games we know and love on the Nintendo 64. I know that Super Mario 64 is the first game that comes to mind when you think of that genre on that console, but I think games like Banjo Kazooie and Donkey Kong 64 are the better comparisons here as it has more in common with them, but there is still a bit of Mario 64 in here too so do not worry about that.

A Brave Little Dragon!

The main character in Cavern of Dreams is a little dragon called Fynn and he has major mascot potential and I am sure he would have been a big hit back in the day, hell, I am sure he is going to be very popular now. Fynn lives in a magical land, but something sinister has happened, his dragon siblings who are still eggs have been kidnapped by an evil force and he needs to set out on an adventure to find them and the one who is responsible for taking them. It is a fun and cute story that is brought to life with interesting characters that have a ton of personality.

Saving Your Family

The gameplay of Cavern of Dreams is just pure Nintendo 64 era platform goodness. Fynn controls great and you start off in this hub world which leads into four very different and diverse worlds where Fynn must find his siblings. As you collect more eggs, Fynn will learn new abilities that will help him get to areas that were previously not open to him. It is really classic stuff, but where this game is a bit different is that Fynn is not running around killing enemies. There is no traditional smacking enemies around combat in this game. It is more about the platforming, exploration, and puzzle solving which I think is pretty neat.

64 Bits Of Power

When developers make these retro inspired games, it tends to be either NES or SNES style that they go for. I think Cavern of Dreams going for that Nintendo 64 approach is awesome as it is retro, but it feels quite fresh compared to what we usually get. It looks like a high resolution N64 game, something that would have used the expansion pack to smooth out the finer details. I just love the whimsy and personality of this world that they have created and little things like the character text boxes look like something from Banjo Kazooie or Conker's Bad Fur Day. Plus, Fynn is freaking adorable and has a ton of personality.

If you are a fan of those old school Nintendo 64 platformers, Cavern of Dreams is 100 percent a game that you are going to have a whole lot of fun with. It is the kind of game that just nails what it is going for. I even think someone who did not grow up with the N64 can have a blast with this as it has a ton of personality and is just a good time when you are playing it. This could end up being one of the best platformers of the year and I hope that it gets a physical release!
