This game from the Corpse Party series takes place two months after Corpse Party: Book of Shadows. This version seems to have fixed old problems from the past, as well as added new features that make the game more enjoyable. In this version, one of the main characters Ayumi, feels responsible for the death of so many of her friends. She decides to go back to the school where so many horrible things happened to her, to try and make things right again.
This is a true horror, very similar to past Corpse Party games such as Sweet Sachiko’s Hysteric Birthday Bash, but this time there are other elements as well. One of the main features of this game is the courage of the characters, as they face difficult and often horrible decisions—and do what they think is best.
Faster speeds, less stamina
One major adjustment in this version of the Corpse Party series is that the characters can run much faster than they did before, but their stamina runs out quickly. This works to make tense chase scenes extra frightening, since the player needs to figure out where to run in order to not run out of stamina before getting caught.
Balanced Game play and story telling
Blood drive offers a lot more interaction compared to Corpse Party: Book of Shadows. Like most of the series, this is still a visual novel, but also offers rich game play in between. The game allows you to solve light puzzles, explore a large map, and avoid dying at the hands of angry ghosts or the build itself.
Spectacular sound and first 3D game
Team GrisGris has become well known for the quality of the audio in this series, and Corpse Party: Blood Drive is no different. The game is best played with headphones, so you can better appreciate the whisper of a ghost on one side of the room, and then suddenly closer and in your ear. It adds to the horror elements of the game and makes it even spookier. Another new addition to Blood Drive is the first 3D elements. The characters are cute and cartoon like, which is appropriate for the anime style game.
No map to help orient you
One aspect of the game that can make play difficult, is that there is no map to consult while playing. When you need to perform an action in order to unlock the next chapter, this can make back tracking to search for what you missed a little difficult. This isn’t a huge problem with the game, but it can be annoying.
This is an excellent horror visual novel with surprisingly few flaws. While the lack of a map to navigate the environment can make game play tricky, the well designed plot line, scary music and audio, and fresh new look has built a worthy game for the Corpse Party line.
