Dark Envoy is a turn-based tactical RPG that blends classic RPG mechanics with skill-based combat. In Dark Envoy, you play as Kalt, who leads a small group fighting back against a mysterious evil force called the Talaan. The story sees Kalt and his allies exploring the fantasy world of Jaan, taking on quests and battling enemies in turn-based tactical combat across procedurally generated levels. The writing and characters aren’t necessarily standouts, but the worldbuilding creates an intriguing setting to serve as a backdrop for the game’s combat.

Skill Trees Add Customization

The extensive skill trees let you customize each party member's abilities and playstyle. With over a dozen specializations like Grenadier or Hexer, you can create unique character builds to suit your strategy. Unlocking new skills and synergies is rewarding. The customization gives you many options in combat, though some specializations do seem more useful than others. Still, exploring the skills is enjoyable.

The procedurally generated levels could use more variety, but they allow for near endless replayability. You’ll come across random enemy placement and objects like explosive barrels to use to your advantage. The randomness prevents missions from ever feeling too similar. Traps, hidden loot, and secret areas provide incentives to explore every inch of each map.

Impressive Polish With Some Performance Issues

Presentation-wise, Dark Envoy punches above its weight class. The hand-drawn art style looks fantastic, bringing the world to life visually. The interface is also slick and intuitive. However, some players have reported performance issues that hamper the experience. Long load times and framerate drops during larger battles need to be addressed. These technical problems hold the game back from reaching its full potential.

Combat is where Dark Envoy shines. With classes like Adept, Warrior, Engineer and Ranger, you assemble a party and engage in grid-based combat not unlike X-COM. You can pause combat at any time to survey the battlefield and plan moves. Party positioning and terrain play key roles - you’ll want to use cover wisely while maneuvering spellcasters and archers to high ground. Almost RPG-like, you’ll need to manage action points, mana, skills, and more. It’s a great hybrid of RPG systems and tactical combat.
