Throughout the history of gaming, we have seen a number of Japanese influenced RPGs that have swept the globe and won the hearts of gamers everywhere. Just look at franchises such as Pokemon or Final Fantasy that are household names in every region. These games offer a variety of different stories and unique gaming mechanics to set them apart from their competitors and many other developers have tried to match these games for style and substance. So how about a game that's main plot point revolves around the art of kidnapping? If your answer is yes please, then you just might like DIDNapper.
This game looks like it will play quite similarly to JRPGs of old that rely heavily on text based dialogue and turn based combat such as Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger or Secrets of Mana to name a few. This game also has a number of unique kidnap themed mini-games included and also has a much more X-rated approach than those games listed but overall, this game delivers on what it promises. A unique JRPG style adventure with a twist.
Captures Your Attention
Beginning with the visuals for this title it’s clear that a great deal of effort has been put into making these just as good as any retro-style JRPG out there. The character models are phenomenal both in their top-down miniature form and in their anime-style close-ups. The costume design and small details make each character instantly recognizable and the environments are truly one of the best parts of this title. Where there is a tendency in some of these games to recycle assets, this game doesn’t do that, making each area vary from the next you’ll encounter and allowing the player to truly feel part of a fully fleshed out world.
Adding to this notion of great presentation, the sound quality is great and adds some atmosphere to each new area. However, the presentation isn’t perfect. The animations aren’t the smoothest and the more risqué scenes seem to have much less polish than the rest of the game which can be quite jarring. These are small issues though in an aesthetic that is far superior to a lot of games within the adult genre.
A Powerful Plot
The game doesn’t skimp in terms of the story either, with a plot that will grip the player from the start and hold your attention right until the end. In total, you can expect to play the main campaign for up to eighteen hours. During this time you will encounter a series of intriguing characters, engage in a series of hard-fought battles and plot revenge on your step cousin Cherisa and the rest of your captors.
While the narrative is great and the dialogue is very well written, we have to admit that the gameplay can be a little suboptimal at times. The combat, in particular, is a little bit repetitive and boring at times, only serving as a vehicle to drive the story forward. Plus, while the raunchy mini-games can be good for more nefarious reasons, they aren’t all that great mechanically which means that they can be frustrating to use.
Let’s Greatness Break Free
While it’s clear that this game looks great and tells a fantastic story, there is an inescapable feeling that this one doesn’t meet its true potential. The combat is a chore at the best of times and the mini-games while in context with the story don’t seem to have been handled well and feel like an oversight.
Despite these criticisms though, there still is an awful lot to enjoy here for retro JRPG and adult gaming fans alike. So if you fall into this bracket we would still recommend you try this one for yourself.
