I am pretty excited to talk about Dragon Quest X which is the online version of the popular RPG series. While it was released on many different platforms all of which offered cross platform play in Japan. The version I am talking about today is the one that often gets ignored and that is the Nintendo 3DS version of the game… that is right there was a version of this game released for the Nintendo 3DS and I want to talk about it today.
Gamers Buying An Empty Box
The first thing to talk about is that this was not released as a physical game, but fans could still go into the store and buy a “physical” box for Dragon Quest X. It contained a download code for the game, some in game items, a 60 day play ticket a poster and some other goodies too. I would wager that as this is now around 10 years old (as I write this) getting one of these boxes in mint condition is probably pretty hard, but it would be quite the collector's item for a big Dragon Quest fan.
The Magic Of The Cloud
The presentation of Dragon Quest X is actually way better than you would think. The reason for this is that the Nintendo 3DS is not doing all of the heavy lifting. The same company that handles the cloud version of games like Control and Assassins Creed on the Nintendo Switch handles the streaming aspect of this game here and they do a great job. It looks great, all be it a little bit washed out compared to the console version of the game. There is a bit of pop in here and there, but for the most part, it is very impressive to see a game of this quality running on the Nintendo 3DS.
The Never Ending Story
The story of Dragon Quest X is the same as it is across all other versions of the game. We start out as a human, but we are attacked by the evil Lord Of Hell Nelgel and our soul gets put into the body of a new race which is essentially our new class. You are on a quest to try and defeat this evil and seal him away once and for all.
Dragon Quest Meets Every MMO!
The gameplay on offer here is pretty solid and amazingly this cloud version on the Nintendo 3DS is still supported. In Dragon Quest X you will be completing quests, getting into combat, finding new loot, items, and so on. As this is an MMO, you will also have to communicate with other players. There is always a keyboard on the bottom screen and this is how you can chat with other people who are in the same game as you. It works pretty well and I never had the game stutter, freeze or have any other issue you might expect from a game that is streaming as you play it.
I will say that Dragon Quest X is all in Japanese so that is something to keep in mind and I have to be honest and say that if we get to the end of this current year and this thing is still being supported on the Nintendo 3DS I will be very surprised. I think that they handled taking Dragon Quest into the MMORPG world as well as they could. There are many things that are typical Dragon Quest here, but they have taken many of the best bits from popular MMOs and put them in here too. In all, I am very impressed that there is a version of this playable on the Nintendo 3DS and if you are a huge fan of the series, having the empty box for this in your collection would be really cool.
- The fact that this is running on a 3DS legit blows my mind
- It still looks fantastic on the 3DS screen
- The gameplay is a nice mixture of Dragon Quest and MMORPG style gameplay
- I like the way the keyboard is always on the screen
- I am still surprised that they are supporting the 3DS version of this game!
- While it looks great, it is a bit washed out compared to the other versions
