Who doesn’t want to let off a bit of steam every now and again? Sometimes we just want to lay down some domination over the world that has inflicted so much wrong over us. Enter Evil Genius 2, which allows players to enact all the evil genius-ness they could possibly ever want. In this lair creating management game, Evil Genius 2 adds a satirical edge to the world of cinematic espionage that makes it as entertaining as it is evil.
Pick Your Genius
Of course, where would a game like Evil Genius 2 be without its geniuses? Rather than opting for a blank silhouette for the player to fill, Evil Genius 2 lets players take the role of one of four evil genius characters: Red Ivan, Zalika, Emma, and Maximillian. Each of these four has their own personality, goals and skills.
Create The Base Of Your Dreams
While the game does have a sandbox mode where you can create your dream base with or without financial constraints, the majority of the game is focused on the campaign mode, which sees players try to achieve their global domination in a silly, Bond-inspired fashion. Fans of the original Evil Genius, Tropico and Dungeon Keeper will certainly enjoy the niche management style wrapped in a spi-fy coating.
Players can expect to manage their minions, expand their global control and of course, enact schemes for power and resources. In many ways, the management of designing your evil lair is as much of a puzzle as it is a creative endeavour. Ensuring that you have all the necessary utilities requires a delicate balancing act if you want to be able to complete objectives with the finite resources at your disposal.
That said, the controls for lair creation do leave a lot to be desired. Even on a keyboard and mouse, where control should be at its best and most granular, the game often resists player input and players might find themselves shouting at the controls, rather than their incompetant minions.
The World Is Yours
And of course, your base is just the start. Players will also take their efforts across the globe, setting up outposts in all seven continents. From there players can assign their specialized minions to take on schemes, which are time sensitive missions that can bring in more resources for your evil empire. Combined with side stories, the world of Evil Genius 2 is filled with spy-fi set pieces that range from extravagant heists, crime lord networking, and even James Bond-esque special agent takedowns.
Sadly, the way that these more elaborate missions are restricted to only one at a time means that players can often find themselves simply waiting for the clock to run down as they wait for access to the next exciting set piece. A way to balance and manage multiple side missions simultaneously would have been a great way to ensure that the pace of the game didn’t suddenly come to a grinding halt.
Deciding to bring back this cult classic into the modern era was nothing short of a genius move. Rebellion have done a fantastic job in upgrading the classic Evil Genius gameplay.
