Fake Signals is a Rougelite game that is still in development, but it shows that you don’t always need top-tier 3D graphics that can make your PC blow into pieces to show an entertaining game with excellent mechanics and a wonderful design. The game is rude, tough, and pretty hard to beat, but it makes you enjoy every second of it.

The Gameplay

The gameplay is excellent and full of small mechanics that, overall, feel well together. There’s nothing that feels out of place. As your objective is to get inside a building, kill everyone and then leave, you can choose to play sneakily or do a rampage with your knife and the first gun you find on the floor. The game endears you to do whatever you want as it gives you the chance of hiding in every place, knock doors and turning lights off, and also lets you blow gas barrels and use very noisy weapons.

The game is pretty challenging; if you get hit once, you are dead, so even if you are planning to do a rampage on the building, you must be careful. Also, there’s a plethora of items, weapons, and situational objects you can use to kill the enemies of this game. There are planted bombs, short-circuit cables, elevators that can crush people, and many more things you have to discover.

The Plot

Fake Signals is heavily inspired by the John Wick movie saga. The game shows the story of a man who lost his family and now is seeking revenge. This mercenary gets inside complexes full of other mercenaries and his task is to kill everyone and progress until finding his objective. A rather simple plot that could be more explored and more variated than just a “man losing his family” cliché. The game has everything to exploit this by giving the player an endearing and hard-to-forget story, but it just doesn’t.

Hardvapour-like Vibes

The graphics are retro and give a Hotline Miami-vibe, but at the same time, they are really detailed. The style and the color palette the game chooses give the game a hardvapour-like aesthetic that fits greatly with the gameplay!

But not everything is great, as the music of the game is rather simple and doesn’t transmit much. The game could feel more dynamic with a beat that gives you some company while you play hide and seek (in not a kind way) with your enemies but, instead, we have a neutral beat that you can rather forget in a couple of minutes or can stick on your head (and not for a good reason) in a matter of seconds.

A pretty good game that promises to be an excellent title with a bit more care on the details and the cliché story. It’s highly entertaining and it can catch you from the get-go if you like this kind of game.
