Field of Honor

Field of Honor is a fun sandbox shooter and strategy game that I downloaded on a whim and ended up spending several hours with. Please note, as I write this the game is still in early access. However, they have a pretty solid roadmap for the things that they plan on adding to the game and even now, there is plenty here to keep you busy and have a fun time with. One thing that is surprising is that this is a single-player only experience, but to be honest, this clicked with me and became a pretty relaxing kind of game for me to play into the wee hours of the morning.

The Napoleonic War

As Field of Honor is a sandbox type experience there is not much in the way of a story here. The Napoleonic War setting is pretty cool and they do not just give you the United Kingdom and France to wage war as. They give you a bunch of other nations in Russia, Spain, Prussia, Austria, Sweden, Portugal, and the Ottoman Empire. I am not exactly sure what the differences are outside of the flags and uniforms, but it is cool nonetheless also, in their roadmap they do have many other nations listed that they plan on adding to the game at a later date.

War On A Grand Scale

There are over 1,000 units on the battlefield during a match in Field of Honor! Each of the nations has three different types of units that you can make use of. Artillery, cavalry, and infantry are the three unit types here and you have a bird's eye view of the map and on this screen, you can take a very hands on approach to how you want your units to engage the enemy. There is strategy at play here, but it is not super deep and not the kind of thing that has a massive learning curve. It is more about, selecting the units and just letting them go to war and then seeing how you do. You have a selection of game modes to choose from in, conquest, defense, assault, and then there is a custom battle option where you can tinker with the rules.

Leading By Example On The Battlefield

While picking and watching a battle plan in Field of Honor is fun. Something that I love about this game is that you can select a person on the battlefield, no matter what one of the unity types they are, and take direct control of them! When you do this, you can have the AI take control of the rest of your soldiers. This was so much fun and it is truly insane when you are in the thick of it and there are just hundreds of soldiers all over the place! The most fun I had with the game was seeing how long I could last with just one soldier. I liked the melee combat better than the artillery, but that was mainly because I liked getting right in the heart of the battle.

Never Judge A Book By It’s Cover

The thing with a game like Field of Honor is that I can imagine many people will take one look at the visuals and say “nope” and move on. This is a very basic looking game, but the basic almost Minecraft/Roblox looking visuals give this game a charm and they are what probably allow this engine to have so many people on the battlefield. It may look basic, but when you are in that first-person mode and actually on the battlefield, it does feel pretty intense. The menu system is easy enough to navigate, but it is not exactly going to pump you up as it is rather basic.

8.5

I will admit, at first I was one of those who did judge Field of Honor based on its visuals as they were so basic. However, after about 20 minutes, I was hooked on this and was having so much fun just playing through battle after battle. I will say that I do think the game is at its best when you are taking direct control of an actual soldier, but I did also enjoy the tactics and strategy you could implement as well. This is a lot of fun and I am very interested to see the new content they add to the game as development continues.

Pros:

  • You can play as many different nations
  • The Napoleonic war is a unique setting for a game like this
  • The battles feel huge when you are in the middle of them
  • This is a very addictive and fun game!

Cons:

  • They could perhaps jazz things up a little
  • It would be interesting to see them add a multiplayer mode

Game Reviews

Field of Honor is a strategy simulator with first-person shooter elements that lets you feel like one of the many soldiers on the battlefields of the Napoleonic expansion. Choose your side in the confrontation, strategize for the real battles of those times. Each country has special units in each of three categories: artillery, cavalry and infantry. Become the leader of an army or share your fate with a completely random soldier. In Field of Honor you can feel the result of your strategy for yourself.

Pros of the game:

  • Real historical battles
  • Play as one of the opposing countries of Napoleon's France
