Game Dev Story

It has to have been about a decade ago that I played the original Game Dev Story on a nokia smartphone that I had and I freaking loved it! I had no idea that this was getting a release on steam until a friend of mine smartened me up about it. I am very, very excited about this game as it looks like it is offering what the original had, but with enhanced visuals. This is a very, very addictive game and one that I have no doubt I will spend an absolute ton of time with.

Making Games, Making Money!

The idea of Game Dev Story is that you run a game development studio and you want to make the best video games. The thing is, you also have to make money, the more money you make the better your company will be. There is no real story here to play through, but there is still a sense of progression as you work your way through the game.

Hiring The Right People

The way that you make your games in Game Dev Story is by hiring the right people for your team. You at first may not be able to afford the best that the world of game programming has to offer. You need to look at people’s stats and decide who will best fit into your place. Of course, the people with the higher stats and more experience will want more money!

Making The Right Games

When it comes to making games in Game Dev Story you have to decide what genre you are going to make. Certain genres will be more likely to make you more money. You have to decide how you will make your game, will you invest more into the presentation or the gameplay? You will also have to have people fixing bugs and working hard to make sure the game is ready to be launched. You can rush a game, but it will be buggy and that may cost you sales and also hurt your reputation as well. Once a game is released, you can track the sales of it which is very awesome to see, and also see what the various game journalists have to say about it.

Gaming Through The Years

I love the sense of progression that Game Dev Story has. You start off making games for what is basically the dawn of gaming on cartridges, but you then work up to making games for systems like the Senga Exodus which is a powerful system. You have to pay for dev kits to make games for a new system so you always need to have a stream of income coming in. Also, making a game for a brand new system can be a risk as it may not have the player base to earn you a lot of money just yet.

Pros:

• The idea of running a game studio is a lot of fun
• I love the pixel art style office you are running
• Hiring new people can be fun
• The whole game is very, very addictive

Cons:

• I am not sure what they have actually added here over the old mobile version
• Adding a bit more story I think would have been fun
