There is no shortage of poker games out there and Governor of Poker has some neat ideas and it does actually come pretty damn close to pulling it all off. This is trying to put a more fun and personably spin on the classic game of Texas hold em poker. By the way, remember in like the early to mid-00s when it was like all of a sudden Texas hold 'em poker became the greatest thing ever? Anyway, this did well enough to spawn a few sequels and it did actually appear on many different systems, the Nintendo 3DS was where I had the “pleasure” to play this.
Buying Up All The Land
One of the things where I feel that Governor of Poker had a lot of potential was with trying to have a story. That is right, this poker game has a story and it is not just all about you trying to become the greatest poker player in the world. Instead, you are trying to build up a property empire by buying all the buildings in various towns that then let you own the town! It is a fun idea, but the game lacks any real wit or humor which is a shame as I do feel that the potential for this to be a fun story is here.
Knowing When To Hold Em!
The main game mode in Governor of Poker has you playing as either a male or female character and then you set out on your quest. Your claim to be the governor of Texas is all about having as much property as you can. There are tournaments that you can compete in which will earn you cash depending on how well you perform. These can help build your bank balance so you can buy properties. There are also cash out style games where you can cash out once you feel you have made enough money.
Straight To The Action
While I feel that the main game mode in Governor of Poker does not quite live up to its potential. At its core, this plays a decent game of poker. You can jump straight into a quick game of poker if you like where you can pick the number of players, the AI, and stuff like that so it is tailored to your poker skill level. As a quick pick up and play style of game, I felt that this actually worked pretty damn well and is probably the best the thing going.
Show Me Some Personality!
I have said a few times that Governor of Poker comes really close to pulling off what they were going for. I just feel that it needs more personality and it could have been an 8/10 style of game. The NPCs are kind of flat and do not entertain you, it looks rather basic and I ended up playing the game with the sound off as it started to get on my nerves. I do feel that the presentation improved with the sequels to be fair.
I have played a ton of poker games over the years, including the sequels to Governor of Poker. I would probably put this game somewhere in the middle. It is not bad, it plays a competent game of poker and I like the idea of trying to become the governor of Texas by playing poker. However, it just lacks that spark to make it something truly special and memorable. I would probably say you are better playing one of the sequels than this one.
- You are playing to be the governor of Texas!
- The premise of the game is a lot of fun
- It plays a pretty fun game of poker
- You can jump in and have a quick game with settings of your choosing
- The sequels are much better
- It is decent, but it just lacks personality
