Poker Night At The Inventory

Most people enjoy Poker as a way to test their skills and perhaps make a little money on the side. Poker Night at the Inventory does set you down for a game of Texas Hold’em, but you may find yourself struggling to keep your poker face in place. Poker Night at the Inventory will probably be the funniest round of cards you have ever played in your life.

This simulation sits you down with four characters you may recognize from other games. The other players in your round of Poker include Tycho from the Penny Arcade, The Heavy from Team Fortress 2, Homestar Runner's Strong Bad, and Max from Sam and Max. Everyone starts out with $10,000 and Texas Hold’em is the only style of game play offered. If you’ve ever played Pure Hold’em or other poker games, this is relatively common for Poker style card games.

It’s the characters that make up this game that is what makes it stand out from other Texas Hold’em poker games. As an example, if a character runs out of cash, they’ll often put up collateral in the form of fun skins or new poker tables, which makes continuing to play enticing. As you play, these characters crack hilarious jokes and banter with each other, making the game very enjoyable, at least at first.

Repetitive Banter

Although these jokes are hilarious, there aren’t enough of them to make long term enjoyment of the game fun. After a few rounds the banter and jokes start to repeat themselves, and that becomes annoying the longer you play. Once you’ve gotten all the items and laughed at what different characters do in the background after they’ve been knocked out of the game, playing is very repetitive as well. The good news is, once you’ve stopped enjoying the banter you can simply turn the sound off and enjoy the poker game itself.

Normal is insane

If you want a normal game of poker, it’s best to play “hard” mode. Otherwise, the characters play style ranges from odd to insane, and it’s difficult to predict what they will do next. Choose normal mode if you just want a few laughs, and then you can get serious with “hard” play.

7

The biggest flaw of Poker Night at the Inventory is that it is a very short game. The game is only fun for about 30 minutes before the banter starts to get old and you’ve won the items. This is fairly balanced with the games very modest price point, which seems to recognize the amount of time the game is fun. If you ended up loving this game and can’t get enough of it, the good news is the makers of Poker Night at the Inventory put out a sequel, Poker Nights 2, with another set of fabulous characters to enjoy.

Pros:

  • Seeing your favorite characters in a casual setting
  • Hilarious banter and jokes
  • Items and other incentives for continued play

Cons:

  • Repetitive
