Strategy games have always been one of the strongest foundations that separated the PC gaming world from the console market. Even though things have changed a lot, and now even smartphones have some incredibly solid strategy games. Imperivm III The Great Battles of Rome released in 2005 and developed by Haemimont Games is a solid example of real-time strategy games on PC, but you rarely if ever hear about this franchise these days, so let's talk about this game.
About the game
The gameplay is more focused on armies, tactics, troops, and terrain topography. It's not as much about building a city or civilization as much as it is about battle strategy. You establish the cities but are not directly involved in most of the resource and material gathering and inner structures of the cities you control.
There are three game modes: Conquest: in which you choose any of the available civilizations and work your way to conquer the other civilizations of the ancient world; Rome’s Greatest Battles: This mode is especially dedicated to being historically accurate in recreating the most crucial battles of and defining moments of ancient Rome; and Custom Game: this is the most basic one in which you can customize the length, characteristics, and more elements of the match.
How does it compare?
When you compare this game against titles like the Age of Empires franchise, you quickly see the differences, as the AoE franchise focuses a lot on the gathering of resources and the design and inner-city Structure. Whereas Imperivm III The Great Battles of Rome plays more like a Risk game.
With some ups and downs, this game had many mechanics that were ages ahead of the competition Age of Empires, however, it is tougher to get into for the most general audience. The in-game economy is incredibly developed, but the battle system still falls behind titles like Rome Total War.
Pros:
- Great visuals
- Interesting economy mechanics
- Fun and solid strategy
Cons:
- Gameplay lacks an in battle
- Not much content
