Kirby's Blowout Blast

Kirby’s Blowout Blast is a unique new Kirby game that gives players just one of Kirby’s special abilities—the ability to suck an enemy into Kirby’s mouth, and then blow it at another enemy to knock them over. Since Kirby’s most popular ability is the ability to duplicate, you’d think this would make for a pretty disappointing game, but Kirby’s Blowout Blast is actually one of the best games to be released yet.

Based on Kirby 3d Mini-Game

Kirby games have a long history of being expanded from mini-games. Kirby’s Blowout Blast comes from a mini-game in Planet Robobot called Kirby’s 3D Rumble. If you’ve played Kirby’s 3D Rumble and wish it were a bit longer, this is the game for you. Kirby’s Blow Out Blast is a good replica of the mini-game, enhancing it’s features and turning it into a small but engaging platformer.

Several Hours of Gameplay

Unlike some of the free-to-play Kirby games, Kirby’s Blowout Blast comes with a small upfront fee. The game asks for $6.99, but has no shop to spend extra money on coins or gems instead. That $6.99 is the only fee you will see in the game.

Despite this fairly low price point, you get well over four hours of content. The game has 5 levels, but the real joy in play comes from trying to beat your own scores.

Accuracy Encouraged

Kirby’s Blow Out Blast judges players on their accuracy whenever they fire off an enemy. Everything from accuracy to how many enemies were taken out, is scored and a medal assigned for that score. Winning all gold medals in a level unlocks an “EX” version of the level. This level is harder, with strong enemies, less health, and harder to earn medals in it.

Still harder than getting all golds to unlock the “EX” version of the level is earning platinum medals. Platinum medals come from what can best be described as a perfect run in the game. It can take hours just to earn one of these medals, but the satisfaction once a platinum has been earned is well worth the effort.

A few Disappointments

Overall, this is a great game. The single ability of catching and spitting enemies is a reminder of earlier games like Kirby’s Dreamland 2, but there’s one problem with the game. It lacks anything new and inspiring. Most Kirby games, indeed most games overall, have some exciting unexpected boss to defeat. Kirby’s Blow Out Blast really falls flat in the boss department. There’s only a couple of bosses and they are recycled later in the game.

This isn’t terribly disappointing, especially considering the price point, but if you’re looking for something new and exciting in the boss department, you won’t be getting it from this game.

Kirby's Blowout Blast is a three-dimensional puzzle game that introduces the player to Kirby, a cute pink creature capable of absorbing objects twice its size. Ride the hurricane through dynamic levels and collect rewards that unlock even more vibrant content. "Inhale" villains with Kirby's powers and increase your firepower.
