Meet The Robinsons
Meet the Robinsons is an adaptation of the animated Disney film of the same name, featuring bright fantasy gameplay with a time travel theme. Like the movie it's based on, the game follows a young inventor named Wilbur Robinson who uses his time-traveling abilities to alter history. The handheld version of the game contains a good variety of gameplay, an original story, and a decent chunk of unlockable content. While it's not the most riveting game ever made, Meet the Robinsons is an entertaining experience with some fun ideas and decent gameplay. The inclusion of platforming, shooter, and strategy elements also provide a nice spread of content, making it an alluring game for players with any preference.
Main Game Features
- Three unique gameplay styles
- Easy-to-learn controls
- Cool inventions and gadgets
The handheld version of Meet the Robinsons takes place after the events of the film, with Wilbur Robinson returning home. Just as he steps into the garage, a surge of bowler hats attacks him. After dispatching the hats, Wilbur discovers that an old foe has begun to unleash havoc by using the Robinson's cloning technology. In order to stop the cloning and save the universe, Wilbur must travel back in time and recruit the help of Lewis once again.
Meet the Robinsons contains over a dozen levels of fun time-traveling fun, spread across three distinct gameplay genres. When you're playing as Wilbur, you'll run around in side-scrolling platformer levels, collecting blueprints and building inventions. Inventions can be used to traverse through levels and attack enemies, and include things like a pizza gun, rocket boots, and time stopper. Using an invention drains your battery power, which also acts as your life-pool, so you'll want to limit your gadget use when possible. You can also play as Lewis in levels with a top-down perspective, where you'll similarly craft inventions and solve puzzles. Whenever you travel in your time machine, you'll speed through side-scrolling shooter stages, blasting down hats and dodging obstacles.
Levels have both main and secondary objectives with ample rewards for completing everything in a stage. In addition to clearing every enemy and finding specific items, there are other hidden secrets to find. Each level contains a hidden present, and when you collect enough, you'll unlock a variety of extra goodies in the main menu. Goodies include concept art, bonus gadgets that act like cheat codes, and mini-games. You can always replay a stage using the level select feature, providing a nice boost of replayability.
When it comes to video game adaptations of animated Disney movies, the bar is relatively low. However, Meet the Robinsons manages to find a cozy and comfortable middle ground by offering simple but diverse gameplay with added collectibles and gimmicks. It's the kind of game that's fun to play in short bursts, scratching your itch for simple platforming and action-based gameplay. The story is mostly forgettable, but it's serviceable with all things considered. Fans of the movie will surely enjoy seeing their favorite characters back in action, and the core mechanics are entertaining enough to keep you interested throughout.
