I have to start by saying that there is a free demo for Midnight Protocol and I highly recommend that you check it out. Anyway, a game where you play as a hacker is always going to be something that interests me, and rather than being an action style of game where you play in the 3rd person, this is taking a very interesting approach. I know to some people they are going to take one look at the screenshots or a trailer and think that it is not for them. However, for a core group of people, this game is going to be something that is just what they have been looking for.
You Have Been Doxxed!
The story of the game is really cool and one of the main reasons I am excited about Midnight Protocol. We play as a hacker (or hacktivist as the game says) that is called Data.
The government is not happy with what you have been doing and you have been doxed and not a less than honest and good branch of the government is coming to blackmail you… unless you do something about it! The game has a very simple art style, but it is very fitting with the whole hacking thing that it has going on.
The Virtual World
I have to say that Midnight Protocol is a very interesting game and the way it is designed is certainly going to make it a niche kind of game in my opinion. The way it works is that you are on your home terminal and the whole game takes place in cyberspace and you use your keyboard to do everything. This sounds complicated I know, but they make it simple enough so that you feel like this epic hacker with all these skills, but without making the gameplay too complicated.
The game lets you be the hacker that you want to be. You can help out the cops, you can blackmail people yourself and you can go to very extreme lengths to try and get yourself out of the predicament you are in, even if this means throwing people under the bus in the process. I like the idea of this and think that the way the choices you make can change the way the story unfolds means that there is going to be a fair bit of replay value here.
Your Keys Are Your Weapons!
The game will have security systems coming to get your or locked areas you cannot access and this is where the excitement of being a hacker in Midnight Protocol comes into play. You have to type in various commands, learn new skills, buy illegal programs from the black market, and so on to make sure that you can progress. It sounds like a great time and it is something that I think for the right person is going to be very addictive.
What really drew me to this game was a hacking section in another game called Operation Tango which I really liked. This looks like a more in-depth and intense version of what that offered in terms of hacking and that is why I am so excited for Midnight Protocol to be finally released.
Do not let the way the game looks put you off, if you like the idea of playing as a hacker this could be a game you are going to have a lot of fun with.
- I love the idea of playing as a cool hacker
- The game is very story driven
- The story can change direction
- It makes being an elite hacker very accessible
- The visuals may make it hard for some people to get invested
- This is a very niche kind of game so will it struggle to find an audience
