If the name Mushihimesama does not ring a bell, the title it got here in the West very well may make you realize what we are looking at today. You may know this better as Bug Princess. This was made by Cave who are the absolute masters of the bullet hell genre and this was originally released on arcades in the early 00s before making its way to pretty much anything that can play a video game these days.
Bugs, Kill Them All
As you would expect from a shooter, there is not exactly a big story in this game, but there is an interesting premise. Mushihimesama is a pretty crazy world where lots of giant bugs called, Koujuu live.
The idea is that we play as a princess called, Reco and she needs to head out into the dangerous bug filled world to try and find a cure for the illness that has swept over her village. She has a telepathic link with a golden beetle (hence the term Bug Princess) called Kiniro that she will use to make it to the Koujuu God to try and find a cure.
Fast And Frantic!
This is a fast as hell kind of shooter where stuff is coming at you from all angles. While you need to have your finger on the trigger as you blow away about a million bugs. You need to learn the different enemy patterns and get an idea of what they are going to do. It is fantastic stuff and while challenging, I feel that Mushihimesama is a very fair kind of game, and the more you play it the better you will get. There is a decent selection of weapons and options that you can use as you take down the bugs and make your way to the epic end of level bosses.
Have It Your Way
No that is not some kind of cheesy Burger King reference, but this game has some fantastic difficulty settings. You can play it on normal (arcade) which gives you a very fair challenge. There is also a novice mode here that is designed with people who are not veterans of the bullet hell genre. I think that this is a great way to ease your way into the world of Mushihimesama (Bug Princess) you can also play a really tough ultra-mode that is not for the faint of heart.
Go Beyond The Arcade
This was already a great looking game, but the version I am talking about is the most recent release and that truly does bring this amazing bug world to life. The game looks stunning and there is some fantastic imagination in regards to the bug design and there are some fantastic background images.
I would bet that many people would be surprised to hear that this is based on a game that is the better part of 20 years old. You can also change the size of the screen; you can even play it in vertical mode if you want a more authentic arcade experience. Bug Princess also has a tremendous and very fitting soundtrack that goes perfectly well with the action.
I hand on heart think that Cave could get away with re-releasing Mushihimesama every few years and people would not have a problem with it. This is a genre that really did explode a few years after this, but I think that this game here holds up as one of the very best that the genre has to offer. It is truly amazing in every sense of the word and any complaints I do have could be classed as me just nitpicking!
